I Like It When You Call Me 'Big Data'

Education may be a little late to the big data party, but with so many collectible data points, education may far outpace the benefits other industries have found. With adaptive curriculum, a myriad of recommendation types, and activity at all levels of institutions, this topic is shaping up to be a fascinating dialogue in the year to come.

An awesome event only outdone by the awesome forward thinkers that attended. I had the pleasure of meeting marketing extraordinaire, Séamus Mulholland. He is definitely one of those rare experts with true expertise in effectively building and promoting a brand. An added bonus is his firm understanding of the dynamics and discrete nuances within the education sector. I am certainly looking forward to the great work we will do together in the future. Reach out to better understand your market! (http://bit.ly/WcfcWj)

Sad I missed you guys yesterday, I'm a teacher too. Never seems to be enough at these edtech events. We should start a little group and see if we can grow it. Hit me up if you head to any events soon.

Thanks David! We definitely have one of those "good" entrepreneurial problems with the group. We've been reaching out to folks all over the city between 14th and 60th st. If anyone in the group has event space contacts, please feel free to send them my way: [masked]. Thanks! Adam

My spot just opened up since I can't make it :( but if anyone wants to meet up and talk Ed tech beyond the meetup, I'm in a tech accelerator working on a teacher collaboration concept and would love to hear from teachers, administrators, designers, and developers. I have a few schools already interested but I'd like to make sure I'm on the right track

    January 14, 2013

Ooo, teacher collaboration... I've been looking to help my sister, a 10th grade English teacher in the Bronx, in this area. I'll connect the two of you.

My background is in nonprofit arts orgs and educational institutions. I'm looking for connections and would love to talk to anyone about nonprofits which increase students' access to resources and educational opportunities. I also have experience in communications and social media and would love to hear about any companies similar to Donor's Choose, which uses online crowd funding to help raise funds for schools.

    Hello Educational Data Scientists,
Our research group at MIT is currently recruiting postdocs to study learning in MOOC data from the edX platform. I am going to try to make it down for this event, especially if there is interest from the attendees in academic-type positions. Some more details about the job are here: http://relate.mit.edu/jobs/ There may be opportunities for non-PhDs too. Shoot me a reply if you or someone you know could be a good fit.

Hi Yoav -- I'd love to learn more about edX and work you are doing. I've been a user/enthusiast about MOOC education for a couple of years and see value to solutions involving mobile and quantified-self technologies that can better tailor mass education to individual needs. Hope to say hello.

      January 15, 2013

Hi Yoav, I'd like to meet you too. Interested in learning about the MOOC research you are doing at MIT.

I look forward to a great event.

Seeing all these folks drop out of tomorrow's event, how does one get in via the waitlist, is it first come first serve, do we trade spots with someone specific? Anyone know?

    January 14, 2013

    • Adam A.

Hi Seamus, We've been both thrilled and concerned about the overwhelming response to the event. We instituted a 250 person cap on the event well past that point, which means those on the waitlist unfortunately will not be able to attend tomorrow in person. The event will be available on Livestream (http://www.livestream...). Even for those with an RSVP we cannot guarantee a space at the event tomorrow. We have to maintain fire safety and when the room reaches capacity we will unfortunately have to turn folks away. All of us organizers are actively looking for alternatives for future events to accommodate our growing community.

I won't be able to make it tmr. Someone else can take my spot. Cu guys next time.
