Re: [NYEdTech] Hangout on Air: Teaching Kids to Code

Grae,

Can't reliably do it today but I plan to listen in to part of the panel if I have a chance.

You're right, there are very few of us but there are some. I've been doing this for over 20 years. I built the Stuyvesant High School CS program and my non-profit CSTUY just finished it's first summer program (46 kids from 30 schools all over the city).

I've hired and trained teachers that now have between 4 and 10 or even more years of experience so we do exist.

It's easy enough to vet me or my team on line.

It's just that the NYC DOE doesn't support us (they'd rather hire people with no tech and no teaching experience to develop their programs).

In any event. If interested, would love to meet and chat with you at some convenient time.

By the way, I just looked up thinkful and I think Ilya Novodorskiy is one of mine.

Best,
Mike

Hey Mike, that's a legit concern.  This isn't my field, but I understand seasoned school teachers with extensive experience teaching computer science to kids are pretty rare.  If you fit into this category yourself, are free from 2:45 to 3:30 ET today, and would like to participate I'd be happy to invite you to the panel.  You can reach me directly at [address removed].

Hey Maurya,

No disrespect to Tom, whom I've never met, but TFA (5 weeks training) then 2 years in the system like saying that someone in the second year of residency is a seasoned doctor.

There are those of us out there who have been doing this with tremendous success for a long time. You'd think the actual teachers would be acknowledged as the thought leaders in the field.

Hi Mike,

Tom Bijesse (who just joined our team at ScriptEd) taught Computer Science at Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology (a NYC DOE school).  I hope he'll be able to help provide the teacher perspective.

Best,
Maurya

Should be an interesting discussion and if I can I'll listen in, but I'm always amazed that these types of panels (WNYC had one last year as I think did the CSTA) never actually include real educators (that is, teachers who actually have real, long term experience).

Hey everyone, we've been doing weekly hangouts on different software development and education topics for a while now.  This week we're stepping away from the topic of adult, skills-based education and talking with a great panel of edtech folks about a topic near and dear to a lot of our hearts: teaching kids to code.

Our panel today will include:
  • Liza Conrad, Hopscotch
  • Carl Sednaoui, CoderDojo NYC
  • Jeremy Rossman, MakeGameWith.Us
  • Tom Bigesse, ScriptEd
  • Sam Frank, Thinkful (fmr. Teach for America)
You're welcome to join live via hangouts on air if you're free at 3:00pm ET today and join the discussion on our G+ page or on twitter with the hashtag #ThinkTank.  If you can't join live we'll post the recording immediately after we wrap up on the G+ page and YouTube.
