PHOTO OP: MERMAID PARADE @ CONEY ISLAND SATURDAY JUNE 21, 2014!

MERMAID PARADE

Outrageous! That’s the word that comes to mind when anyone mentions the Mermaid Parade. This annual Coney Island event is celebrating its 29th Anniversary.  Although the parade through the streets and on the boardwalk begins at 1 PM, you’ll find better photo ops by getting there around 11 AM, purchasing a Press Pass for $10, and shooting in the staging areas. You’ll be able to mingle with the participants as they prepare their floats, don their scanty and intricate costumes, drenching each other with full body paints of every color and description. You’ll also be able to shoot the parade of antique cars and floats. The staging areas this year are along Surf Avenue, west of MCU Stadium, on 20th and 21st Streets. Take the ‘D’ or ‘N’ train to the Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue station or the ‘F’ or ‘Q’ train to the West 8th Street/NY Aquarium station.  If you thought the Village Halloween Parade was great, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet—and this is all in the daylight!

For more info see: http://www.coneyisland.com/programs/mermaid-parade

Do not bring tripods as there's too many people, use on-camera flash or speedlights for contrasty light fill or backlighting fill.

There is no charge for this event unless you opt for $10 Press Pass!

My own previous experience with press passes is that unless you work for a publication or you are a member of the media..................why should one get one?

The excitement of the event - the costumes - the parade - the interaction with the participants - that's the Mermaid Parade for the general public in attendance.

A photographic enthusiast should give the media professionals their assignment beat so they can get their work done so they can file their work and go home.

    Isn't that reasonable?

Chris...we're waiting to see those A7 pics...so we can hurl clichés like "my Lord, that's good..."

      1 · June 23, 2014

    • Chris L.

Oh dear, I haven't even touched them yet! Hopefully sometime this week. But there is another shoot tonight! I mostly used the Canon on Saturday so there won't be many A7r pics I'm afraid. Cheers

Chris you are right. I think the event and one's composition is the central theme not where you take it!

If you buy a press pass for the staging area you can get up close with the individual(s) subject(s) and get their undivided attention a one on one so to speak. Inside of dodging to get a good shot during the parade. Hey? If you want to buy a pass fine. If you do not want to buy a pass fine. The money goes towards the following year fund for the parade. Dick has to spend like $50,000 if not more for insurance for the day of the event. So your choice is not to buy a press pass. No big deal. Some folks like to walk amongst the participants.

I was not able to get a press pass. Was asked if I was part of the media. Got good pictures though. It was
    a great experience!

    • Laura

Why couldn't you buy a press pass. There were tents set up on 21 street and the volunters were eager to take Yyour money To help SUPPORT next year's parade.

I had a great time at the parade! Although I didn't get a photographer pass and wasn't able to connect with members of the group that were there, it was a lot of fun and I got some nice shots!

    June 22, 2014

    • Laura

Bathrooms are on the side if Nathans pass the umbrella tables left hand side. There are bathrooms on the back of Luna park amusement park as well.

I will be wearing a red tshirt with big communist robot on it with a sickle.

    June 21, 2014

Walking along with boardwalk and the beach is my usual approach. The Press area is always crowded and generally everyone with a camera gets the same picture. (Just My Opinion). Joe

Hi - wondering if I could possibly tag along with you guys. What time are you meeting? And did you already purchase a photographers pass?

      June 20, 2014

  • DK from the B.

    Hi,

Here is my game plan. I have a photographers pass and will pick it up around 11:30 and check out the staging area from 12pm and on. Depending on how things go I will stay there for a while and then move into the vicinity of Cyclone to avoid the crowds at Stillwell. I live within walking distance of everything and know the area well.

    June 19, 2014

    • Phil E.

DK I live in Sheepsheadbay with that being said I suggest setting up at by MCU Park

      June 19, 2014

But it may be better to walk along the parade route. See the comment from Joe below.

Hi all! I won't be able to make this event but I've shot the parade a number of times! It would be great for a group of members to get together to shoot and eat and socialize after. Have a fun time. Ed

I am going to arrive before 12 noon, since some of the others said 1pm is too late!

      June 17, 2014

  • philip

I think one clock is way too late, in order to get a good photo, One must be there before 12....

    June 16, 2014

    • Laura

This is true! I live a couple of blocks away from the amusement area.

      June 17, 2014

  • Edward L.

Hi all! I stand corrected. I got that price from a reliable source, so I thought. Can you believe a few years back, the Press Passes were only $5! Have a good time! Ed

    June 17, 2014

  • Laura

Surf and Stillwell ave.? That is by the train station and B36 bus stop across the street from Nathans.

    June 16, 2014

    • Phil E.

Yess Laura, its the large end of line station (Stillwell), I have two suggestions. first get there alot eariler some of the best street shots will be before it gets crowded (and this parade GETS CROWDED) second: Stillewll accross from Nathens in not a good spot to view this thing try by cyclone park

      June 16, 2014

  • philip

I hope I will be at the Mermaid before noon

    June 16, 2014
