NY Quantified Self Show&Tell #23

  • Sep 30, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Hello QSers!

Monday, Sep 30th is our next NY QS Meetup. Please come out and share your methods, results and insight with the group during the Show&Tell talks or, if you're a toolmaker, come share during Demo Hour and get feedback from the QS community in a more informal setting.

6:00 -7:00 pm DEMO HOUR & SOCIAL TIME
Are you a toolmaker? Come demo your gadget, app or project that you're working on and share with others in our "science fair for adults." Want to participate in Demo Hour? Please let us know when you RSVP or fill out this entry form to apply for a spot:

7:00 - 8:00 pm QS SHOW & TELL TALKS
This is our main event of the evening. We're looking for talks of personal accounts of self-tracking and self-experimentation.

If you'd like to give a talk, please let us know when you RSVP or here so that we can discuss your topic and how much time you'll need. We keep the length of presentations to 5 minutes + 5 minutes for Q&A. If you have slides to show, feel free but it's not required. Giving a Show&Tell talk and our three prime questions.

Talk to the speakers, chat with new and old friends, ask other people what they're tracking, and generally hang out and have a great time.

An incredible space is generously being provided by Projective Space, a community-centered coworking space for creative entrepreneurs.

We hope to see you on the 30th.

It was a joy to demo our iOS app, Personal Beasties Breathing, to all who stopped over for a look. Thanks for the great feedback! Looking forward to next month's gathering, till then keep breathing deeply >;)

Thanks speakers. My second time and it was great! Glad to hear that we might have a way to attract more women to self-quantification. As a researcher, I am always disappointed by the lack of focus research in female animals and humans, due to complexity. If more females get into self-quantification, we might learn some interesting things that would otherwise be unknown.

I'm also really interested in the QS Women's meetup so looking forward to hearing more info on that. Some feedback on demo hour: it's really hard to see things on everyone's 13 inch Macbook Pro. I know it's tough to find ways around that but even two computers, something on an iPad, even a science fair old school foam core board would help. Or I just need a new eye exam.

Thanks for a great meetup everyone, I had a blast sharing the Perfect Day system I've been using. I also got some great tips on tweaks to make and things to consider.

First time at the meetup, it was great! Nice to finally meet a bunch of my kind of nerds.

Inspired by the sleep talk, I downloaded my Jawbone Up data and tried to replicate the speaker's finding that deep sleep % is correlated to previous night's sleep duration. In my case there does not appear to be such a correlation:

Also interesting, the amount of deep sleep seems somewhat unrelated to the amount of total sleep — ~4 hours of deep sleep regardless of whether I'm sleeping 6, 7 or 8 hours:

To put it another way, % Deep Sleep declines somewhat as my # of hours of Total Sleep increases:

Next step is to correlate my sleep to my performance in StarCraft and Chess. :)

My apologies for the impersonal announcement, I had hoped to share this in person at the event tonight. I head up the new Connected Device Accelerator at R/GA powered by TechStars. We are accepting applications from start-ups in all industry sectors through October 11th - more info at It's a great opportunity for many of you in the connected device arena, wanting turn an idea into a company. I was hoping to join you all tonight and spread the word, but family calls. We're also hosting an 'meet-and-greet' at R/GA on Tuesday, October 1st. Please register at '' if you'd like to attend. All my best. Eric

Hi there Eric. Does the meet-and-greet still have available space? I signed up for it after seeing your message but was told there was no room available and that I was on a wait list. What's the deal? Richard

I'm interested in how QS systems can be used to make art more useful. Professionally I am a photojournalist for Bloomberg News but have been working on how to track the effectiveness of community art projects.

Is anyone else having trouble RSVPing with a +1?
