NY Quantified Self Show&Tell #17 (ITP)

  • Jul 24, 2012 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

It's time for our summer meetup!

Please come join us in late July for a night of demos and talks on self-tracking and self-experimentation where members of the NY QS community share ideas, tools and experiments. If you are self-tracking in any way -- health, productivity, biometrics, mood, sleep, pain, happiness, energy, etc -- come and share your methods, results and insight.

We will have another hands-on demo hour before the talks.

6:00 -7:00 pm DEMO HOUR & SOCIAL TIME
If you have a self-tracking project, visualization, gadget, app, or idea you'd like to share or demo, but you don't want to get up and talk about it during the Show&Tell talks, we will have a couple of breakout rooms where you can demo the gadget, app or project you're working on and share with others in a more intimate setting. If you'd like to showcase your project during Demo Hour, please let us know when you RSVP.

7:00 - 8:00 pm QS SHOW & TELL TALKS
Presentations will start at 7pm. We save the talks for personal accounts of self-tracking and self-experimentation, rather than sales pitches. We're also interested in gadgets or tools that you've built to track something about yourself.

If you'd like to give a talk, please let us know when you RSVP so we can discuss your topic and how much time you'll need. We keep the length of presentations to 5 minutes + 5 minutes for Q&A. If you have slides to show, feel free but it's not required.

Talk to the speakers, chat with new and old friends, ask other people what they're tracking, and generally hang out and have a great time.

An incredible space is generously being provided by NYU ITP, a two-year graduate program located in the Tisch School of the Arts whose mission is to explore the imaginative use of communications technologies.

Hope to see you on the 24th.

I loved it. I should've been here a very long time ago. I can't thank the community enough for how welcoming they were, and for giving me so much great feedback on Emotish.

Thanks Kostas, it's a great site! At first glance, the data capture looks similar to Flickr - likes, faves, and comments. 500px looks better connected to marketing opps. I like the visual storytelling tool, that's a good idea.

Last night's talks covered not just a variety of topics, but also an interesting range of positions on the cultural value of self-quantification - the first three talks, I think, asked some very good questions. In Sharla Sava's talk we can see that self-representation in media is actually necessary to achieve some level of insight into our lives. Objectivity comes in all shapes - not just numbers. Quite a lot of potential here.

Thought there would be more apps demoing. The first and last speakers were good, but I felt like the middle 2 lost the audience in technical jargon and lack of relevance

Fantastic mix of expertise - clever geeky open and creative. Great people.
