Screenburners: Video Gaming 102 (The console strikes back)

Welcome to Screen Burners!!

Are you a hard core gamer? Love your RPGs or FPSs or MMORPGs? Huh do you? Do you play Skyrim late on a Tuesday night until you see the sun come up from the window and think “not again!” Do you go to sleep at night with that final board burned into your corneas for the next half hour after you close your eyes? Of course you do because you, my friend, are an addict. So, now that we’ve admitted it, lets go and form a support group.

We are starting up a new group for video game enthusiasts to get together and:

1.  Talk about new releases, watch trailers, and play demos. We can take a look at upcoming consoles like PS4 and Xbox-one. We can also take a look at latest PC Hardware and the games that push even the fanciest alienware gear.

2.  Talk about our favorite games. Get deep into character builds, strategy, tips, tricks, cheats, and mods.

3.  Delve into the the DIY world. Building a custom PC that’s right for you considering your level of time, money, and experience.

4.  Talk about platforms. PS3, Xbox, Wii, PC, Mac, Linux, android, iOS, or whatever. What kinds of devices do you own and how do they stack up?

5.  Swap games. Not everyone has every game. But where there is an internet connection there is a way.  For those of you with steam accounts feel free to log in and show us what you’ve got. I’ll always have a laptop with me so we can log in and play.

6.  TBD. I’m open to suggestions. The first time around I will be extra interested in your feedback. What do you like to play? What would you like to cover? Let me know!

Noob Friendly:

What’s that you say? “I haven’t played a game since Pac-Man. There’s no way I could keep up with these fancy new games!” Are you concerned that most of what we will say will be as esoteric as a physics journal? Worry not. As much as this group gets into the weeds it will also be accessible to people of all experience level. I don’t talk in lingo and I’m happy to introduce anyone to the wonderful world of gaming.  If you’ve been out of the loop and want to see what the kids are doing these days please join up and you will see!

For the second round of this group we'll do some more hands on gaming with a ps3!

See you there!

I was unable to attend another Meetup I had RSVP'ed to, and had wanted to go to this one. I thought this would be a natural fit for me (lifelong gamer) but could tell that this is a work in progress. The host meant to show us gaming videos as a segue into further discussion, but was having technical difficulties. Someone had brought a PS3 with some games, but the games were one player, so all I could do was watch and try to make conversation with someone, which proved to be futile. It was one of those Meetups where everyone seemed to know each other, and as a first-timer, I felt left out (BTW, the last Meetup I attended was also a NY SciFi/Fantasy, and it was night and day, everyone was very outgoing and welcoming). I ended up just leaving. I may be coming off as ultra-critical, but do feel that a group like this can have potential. I like talking about gaming almost as much as I like playing, your group just needs some finetuning, IMO. No flaming, please.

Another possibility is to change the venue itself. Stonecreek is great in terms of location and it is nice to play on that projector but there are a lot of limitations as I listed above. Now, I could do everything at my apartment but I'm not sure if people would be willing to come on out to bushwick. If that is something people like then I'd be happy to do that. It would solve all of the technical issues that we currently have.

Last night I think I got very distracted by all these tech issues. Ideally I would like to do more talking with everyone. I didn't realize it got cliquey but it is good to know. I have always felt the same way you do about NY/SciFi and I wanted this group to feel welcoming to everyone. I don't want anyone to feel stuck and bored while here so I think there may be a way to increase participation. If you find a story or a trailer that you think is cool then by all means bring it in and we can talk about it. Play a video, make a powerpoint, do whatever you want and we can see something cool. You can download youtube videos with a flash add-on pretty easily. So just bring that in or whatever you have and then we'll do that for awhile.
I hope that addresses everything you brought up. I want to make this group the best it can be and your feedback helps. I enjoyed meeting you and I hope you make it to the next one!
