Balls of Furry! (A Celebration of Tribbles and Mogwai)

  • Dec 1, 2012 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is no longer available

Lookit how fluffy and cute?!?!

If it's ball-shaped, furry, and multiplies, basically run.

Get ready for an evening of Star Trek and Gremlins with this event!

Tribbles were introduced to the world in 1967 on Star Trek: The Original Series, and were either loved or hated by fans immediately.

Mogwai were introduced to the world in 1984 in the original motion picture Gremlins, a film that (along with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) resulted in the creation of the PG-13 rating.

Fact: Bands have been named after both.

Fact: I have been "wetmogwai" all over the internet since 1998, so this event is kinda special to me.

5:00pm - socialize, grab a seat
6:00pm - start the viewings

Viewing order:

Block 1:

- The Trouble with Tribbles (Star Trek: TOS)

- Gremlins

Block 2:

- Trials and Tribble-ations (Star Trek: DS9)

- Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Please note this event will fill up extremely quickly. Please add yourself to the waitlist if you didn't get in and want to come, as spaces will most likely open up.

Food and Drink Note: This is going to be a long meetup. We're going to be hungry and thirsty and we'll be there for 7 to 8 hours.

Everyone should bring two things to this meetup - 1 entree, and 1 other item of your choice (drink, dessert, side dish, etc). I understand this sounds like a lot, but think of it this way - how much food/drink will you want during an entire evening of furry balls? This will ensure there's a good selection of eats and drinks and enough to go around! If anyone's not sure what to bring, please ask! Theme foods are always appreciated! Eating after midnight is permitted.

I keep a stocked bar that's kept stocked through these meetups. If you want a specific mixed drink and don't know how to make it, just ask and I'll be happy to make one for you (provided I have all the ingredients!).

Items the bar can use:

- Good quality vodka

- Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka

- Coconut Vodka

- Pumpkin Vodka

- Jameson

- Pickle juice

- Soda mixers

- Juice mixers

If you prefer beer, you may want to bring some. I only keep whatever's left from past meetups since I'm not a beer drinker.

Cash Option: If you'd prefer, you can show up to the door with $20 cash. All monies collected will go towards future events and promotional materials.

Directions via Subway: Take the N or Q train to Astoria Blvd. When you get off the train and walk down to the ticket machines and booth, you'll be able to see a Burger King. Walk AWAY from the Burger King towards the stairs and take the LEFT stairs down to the street. This will put you at the corner of 31st Street and Astoria Blvd. Make a RIGHT on Astoria Blvd and walk about 5 minutes to Crescent St. Make a RIGHT onto Crescent and my building is halfway down the block on the left. There's a buzzer for 4G.

Man, I was going to bring Sno Balls but it turns out they were made by Hostess! Oh well, I guess I'll have to find some other ball shaped food!

Suggestion- I know for a fact that they have the live action Popples special from 1986 on youtube! Any interest in showing this too?

Most likely not, mainly because I've wanted a mogwai popple for about 2 decades and they never made one. I'm not counting anything out 100%, though. There's one other thing I'm considering showing, depending on time.

Yah! My brother and sister and I were huge Star Trek fans and The Trouble with Tribbles was our all time favorite episode! Course I was really young.....but I remember it! I will bring my usual Vodka and donuts - but instead of the usual assorted dozen, it will have to be a Bucket of Tribbles!
