Current Topic: What is Emptiness?
“Form is no other than emptiness, emptiness no other than form; form is exactly emptiness, emptiness exactly form.”
These lines are an important part of the Heart Sutra that we chant each week during our daily service. The words may seem contradictory and possibly even confusing. Yet, they contain one of the most important ideas in Buddhist philosophy.
For the next several weeks we will dive into the concept of emptiness in order to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us. We will review some core Buddhist teachings in order to understand where emptiness fits in. During each week’s talk we will engage with both the philosophy of this idea and with the practical application for our practice.
We hope that our focus on emptiness will bring fullness to your practice.
Please join us for our weekly class and Meditation Service in the San Mateo room of Christ Church Cathedral at 35 Chestnut Street in downtown Springfield. Click for directions.
The evening starts at 6:30 PM with a lesson/discussion led by Jenn (Shingaku), an ordained Tendai Buddhist priest and the leader of our Sangha. After the discussion, at 7PM, we perform the Daily Service to create a sacred space and to practice a form of mindfulness that will enable greater focus for the rest of the evening.
Following the brief service, we engage in two 24 minute meditation periods. The first is "just sitting" - letting thoughts arise and fall away without grasping onto or being swept away by them. We then stand for a few minutes to relax the legs. The second meditation period could be a guided visualization, a contemplation, chanting, loving-kindness meditation, or a walking meditation.
We are a small sangha that has been meeting regularly for the last three years. Please consider joining us this Thursday evening! Here's some links to learn more:
