Naikan is a way of getting to know and understand yourself by examining important relationships in you life from the time you were born to the present.
Naikan is not a religion. It is a rational practice of self-discovery that is simple. You examine yourself using the following three criteria in relationship to your mother, father and key people in your life:
1. What someone did for you.
2. What you did in return.
3. What trouble you caused that person.
Naikan was originally developed from the Buddhist sect of Jodo Shinshu and was called mishirabe - or examining your inner self. There is a saying "no one knows less about you than yourself". Naikan provides a path to examining the inner self through quiet reflection.
