Napa Valley Insight Meditation Message Board › Mudita, Appreciative Joy: Reading for April 8th NVMG
In preparation for Guest Teacher, Kathy Cheney’s April 15th talk on the practice of mudita (“sympathetic joy” in the Pali language), I thought it would be inspiring to touch into the practice and experience of mudita this week.
For our April 8th meeting, we will read a short article by Roshi Joan Halifax entitled, “Sympathetic Joy: The Third Abode”. Please bring a copy along with you. You may download the article here:
If it speaks to you, this week I invite you to take on the simple, but not so simple, practice of noticing when you are experiencing joy. What circumstances cultivate a sense of delight, lovingkindness, gratitude, compassion? Where do you feel joy in your body? How does it land in your heart and your mind? With our brains being naturally wired to notice what is going wrong and to anticipate the worst potential outcomes, I have found this practice of actually noticing and taking in joy as it is arising to be quite profound. Have fun with this and see what insights arise for you!
As shared by Sharon Salzberg in her book, Loving-Kindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness, “As mudita grows, we see that the happiness of others is our happiness.” (pg. 133)
Looking forward to our time together,
