Tales of 13th Age

Quest in the Cathedral

Part 1 - Ranger Ex Cathedral

Game Master: Ben / Sarah

Duration: 2 - 4 hours

Player Limit: 6

Adventure prelude…

The characters on this adventure are pilgrims, all seeking the knowledge that can be gained from an Oracle that lives high up in the Cathedral. The Cathedral in Santa Cora stretches as high as the clouds and beyond, and walking the millions of steps up into the clouds is considered a form of worship and a holy endeavor.

To reach the Oracle requires a trek equivalent to climbing several mountains, and most pilgrims turn back. Even if the pilgrims are hardy enough to climb the Cathedral there is the issue of the thousands of monks, hermits, stylites, ascetics, zealots, mystery cults, priests, paladins, cenobites, stoics, sages, saints, fakirs, holy fools, desert mothers, demianites, matrisses, nuns, templars, sōhei, mendicants, eremitics, barefoot  seekers of truth, and celestines. Each god or goddess of light has a temple within the mighty Cathedral, and to pass up the Cathedral it is necessary to pass through most of them. Some might be bypassed or passed through with naught but a simple tithe or show of devotion.. other holy places are not so easy to pass through.

Quest in the Cathedral is a dungeon crawl, but ascending vertically and with a ‘holy’ theme.

Adventure recaps from the previous adventure will be posted on our blog here: http://13thagetalespinners.wordpress.com/

Important note:  This is a 2nd-level tier adventure that takes place simultaneously with Crown of the Lich King and Wyrd of the Wild Wood.  We will be playing with new level 2 characters for this adventure!  Don't worry about the characters who survived the last adventures - they will be returning for higher level tier adventures. See the below chart.

About the game…

13th Age is a new fantasy roleplaying game, designed by Jonathan Tweet – lead designer of Dungeons & Dragons® third edition – and Rob Heinsoo, the lead designer of the fourth edition of D&D®. 13th Age honors old school fantasy role-playing values as it dives deep into rich story telling adventures. The game features a familiar d20-style system, but it lighter on the rules compared to D&D which results in smoother, free-flowing combat. An Escalation Die rule that keeps battles fast and exciting by giving characters an escalating combat bonus the longer they fight.

The game focuses on connecting players to the world they are in through the use of background-based skills as well as detailed relationships with the key movers and shakers of the world – The Icons. Adventures will encourage creative and imaginative ways to solve the challenges set before them.

The adventure is crafted for 3-6 players.  The majority of mechanical character development will be completed in advance with 10 available pre-generated characters.  Players will be able to select from these and develop their background, Icon relationships  and their place in their world before diving into the adventure itself.

Additional note from your Meetup organizers–

Due to the busy holiday retail season ahead this adventure will not be held at Fair Game, but rather hosted by us at our apartment!  We have a large spacious table and plenty of seats for everyone!  The plan is to return to Fair Game after the holidays for the fourth six-week adventure, Shadow Port Shuffle.

If you are new to visiting our apartment we are located at 2424 Emerald Court #106 in Woodridge. We’re just west of I-355 off Janes Ave between 75th Street and Boughton. Please note Janes Ave is a 25mph street and the police strictly enforce it.

Okay, so my human ranger was wimpy compared to the wood elf ranger I played before, who had elvan grace and double damage on even attack rolls. But charming the rats was too fun! I can't wait to see how I'll use my other background ideas. I liked having new gods and challenges for each level of the Cathedral we entered. It keeps us all from getting too complacent about our approaches to problems.

The scout cat might have been amusing, but I doubt I'd have played it much; it's so much more fun if PCs do stuff than if extras do. Would I feel differently if I had ever had a henchman? Hmmmm.

I'll lose some bonuses with the race change. Do I still have the heal spell once per battle? That was certainly an unusual twist for a ranger.

We're a bit light on drinks and snacks today. Water and lemonade will be on hand. If you want something else there's a Jewel, McDonalds and Walgreens on the corner of 75th street and Janes, or a 711 and Subway on the corner of Janes and 83rd.

This adventure sounds awesome, but I have a dance class in Aurora that conflicts with the time slot. By the time I could get showered and to your place the game would be half over. :-( But perhaps there will be a week when my class is canceled; if so I'll join you. Otherwise I'll try to catch the next session. Game on!

Okay, Marv and I have swapped positions and he's on the waiting list now. I feel awfully guilty about taking his spot.... Obviously I should have changed to "Yes" when we were discussing the time change. :-o Next week will be packed also if Melissa joins in. Oh, and I am thinking of a ranger but haven't got much farther on character development.

Don't feel guilty. I'm fine with it. :-)

Anna and I made the switch so she's a "go" now and I'm on the wait list. It's okay if I don't get to play, since I have piles of stuff to do for work today. :-)

We are looking for a few more players! New players are more than welcome. :)

I'm not a new player, but I think I can make it this weekend. Not sure which other weekends work, but I'm pretty sure I can be there at 2 tomorrow.

2 pm works for me, but I have something to do around 6 so I might need to leave a little early. It would just be for this week. I can't really see the time change being a problem otherwise.

I'll be out of town this weekend... but I do want to get in on the others if you don't fill up.

With the busy holiday season I doubt we will fill up. We'll see you the following week then! Make sure to note that we are playing this adventure at our apartment. I do not know if that affects your plans.
