All skill Levels Paddle with the manatees

Beginner Kayak Trip Offered

Everyone is invited to join the local paddling clubs for a beginner kayak trip on the Orange River on February 2nd Terri Krass, Florida Master Naturalist, and Mike Devlin, President of the Paradise Coast Paddling Club & Nyad Extreme Dream Team Member are offering a free guided trip from Manatee Park into the Orange River where many manatees gather in the cooler weather. Parking is $1 per hour - pay at the machine at the park entrance. Everyone will meet at the kayak launch in the back of the park. The day will start at 9:30AM with a free basic kayak lesson presented by Mike Devlin. Topics covered include forward stoke techniques, safety, and boat maneuvering. Terri will discuss paddling with the manatees and how to safely interact with them. We plan to be on the water and ready to go at 10:30. You can bring your own kayak or rentals are available at Manatee Park - singles and tandems (2 person) boats. If you plan to rent, you should contact Manatee park [masked]) and reserve a boat. Everyone must wear a PFD (life jacket), which will come with all rental boats. Bring water, sunscreen and It is a good idea to bring a waterproof container for your car keys! After the trip plan to join us at a local restaurant "So Then We Can Eat"! This a fun trip designed to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy kayaking. If you are an advanced paddle the river is long & beautiful if you want to put on some miles. We will also have information available about our kayak clubs and additional trips that are planned. We hope to see you at the boat launch at Manatee Park, Sunday, February  at 9:30.

Great news Erika...thanks for being persistent. I don't have any idea who Vicki is or how anyone would have a count of participants. I also haven't heard that there have been any problems with the rental reservations. Like you said....water under the bridge!

Erika, If you want to reserve a rental kayak the phone number is[masked]-4600. I talked with Calusa Outfitters this morning and they have plenty of kayaks. The phone number listed in the trip announcement is for Manatee Park - I thought they would refer people to the rental company but I think they were confused about the "group" . Each person renting will take care of their arrangements - as we have done the past serveral years. We are expecting a large crowd again this year - which is wonderfu! We will try to get the experienced paddlers in the water first so they can enjoy a longer paddle in the area. I have serveral people who have offered to stay and help the new kayakers - thank you in advance for being so cooperative. The goal is for everyone to have a safe, educational, and enjoyable experience. Look forward to seeing meeting everyone. Terri

Just an important reminder for all: It is unethical and illegal in Florida to "pet" a manatee. Rather, if you want to feel what their hide texture is like, you can use the back of your hand or a closed fist. They closest relative is an elephant, and their hide is similar. Manatees lack blubber, as other marine mammals have, and so they congregate up in the Orange River near the Power Plant's warm water emission. Interestingly, since being modernized, the plant need not emit the warm water; however it does because of the manatee's long-standing migration to those waters. Another example on a greater scale of non-interference. So, do your part on our trip on Feb 2 and passively enjoy the manatees' company.

Mike and Terri. Thanks for getting the paddle together again this year. You guys are the best. I have attended for a couple of years now and you are well organized. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. I'll be there early and you can let me know what I can do.
