Tubing Rainbow River

  • Aug 3, 2013 · 7:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Have you ever been inner tubing down a river? Just imagine banding multiple inner tubes together and slowly floating down the river with some great people. You will be floating through crystaline waters shaded by huge trees.

Since this river is quite a jaunt away, we make a full weekend out of it. Car pools will leave Friday and we will come back Sunday. Tubing will be Saturday 8:30AM. We will meet around 7am to carpool down to the Rainbow River to tube for the day.  Address posted here is for tubing parking.

------------------------------------------------

Fri & Sat Accommodations:

Park Place Condominiums

First tour the rooms on line, each is different: http://www.parkplaceincedarkey.com/Tour%20our%20Facility.html

Then call [masked] to reserve your room.

We are getting the AAA pricing for the rooms. $81/night for the 2nd floor and $85/night for the 3rd floor lofts. Tri County has reserved pretty much the whole 1st floor. All the rooms have FULL KITCHENS. Mention that you are with the Naples Activity Network and the dates are August 2 and 3.

CEDAR COVE is the secondary option after we sell out Park Place. And between us and Big Dave's group, we will sell it out.

If you wish to camp on your own, look into the state park or county park facilites.

Saturday's tubing activity:

Rent a tube at the park, and slowly meander down river for 2 hours.

http://www.floridastateparks.org/rainbowsprings/activities.cfm#41

This is the STATE park, not the Marion COUNTY park.

Pricing per person:
Pay at the river when you get a tube

$10.60 to rent a tube + transportation back to the parking lot + Taxes
http://www.rainbowspringspark.com/Rainbow_River_Park.php

It can get quite hot or quite cold according to which end of you is in the water or exposed to the sun.  Bring plenty of sunscreen.  Bring food and non-alcoholic drink -- but don't dispose of anything along the way.

Make sure you have a comfortable tube or float with head support if needed and possibly a drink holder for your non-disposable drink container.  Renting a large tube is unwise, as you will slip out too easily.  A dry bag or box is a great help for food, camera, cell phone and car keys.  You can bring a cooler with plenty of liquids but put it in a tube or some kind of float to keep it from tipping over and spilling out into the river.   A little rope or cord is handy for tying each other's floats together.

The float starts and ends from the same park location.  Nature Quest, Inc rents the tubes and provides shuttle service 2 miles upstream.

When you leave the tubing entry point, you are embarking on about a ~2 hour journey down river. Exit the river and you'll be back at the parking lot or take a shuttle back to repeat the trip.

If you are driving from Cedar Key, it's about a one hour commute.

This is a new tubing experience for most of us, since in the past we would get up at 5am to tube down the Ichnetucknee without any food or water. We will be going with Big Dave's East Coast group. http://www.meetup.com/Tri-CountyAdventures/

We skipped last year, and the year before that we did the longer county side of Rainbow Springs.

I hate to tell you but yes there are gators in that river. I kayaked there recently and saw two small ones. They didn't seem bothered or interested in all the tubers.

Hello, I just went tubing there last weekend. At 9 am wait time at the state park was 2-3 hrs to get on the water, at 10am line to get to the park (limited parking) was 1.5 hrs. so I went couple miles down the road to http://www.aquaticwildernessadventures.com/Pricing.html
where they have enough parking, shuttle going back and forth non stop- $10 per tube rental and shuttle. They drive you up the river, you float for about 4 hrs, ad end up at your car and Swampy's restaurant ready to get refreshed.
Few weeks ago I went with kayaks there, and similar problems: state park parking full.
I really enjoyed this place and nice, relaxing , over 4 hrs float (I did not paddle at all, just relax).
I also would suggest that since water temperature is only 72 degree, going very early might be a chilling experience, especially for the parts of you that are immerse in the water :-)

I agree 4 hours in the chilling water can get you sick

at 8 30 am even 2 hrs can be... I was there just about 2 weeks ago, on the water from around noon till 4 or 5 pm and it was great, despite couple of rains.. and Alessandra, if you are "vertically challenge" like me, you can easily keep parts of you out of the water LOL

Is there any other hotel close by? I am wondering since we will be driving for many hours on friday the last thing we wanna do is drive another hour to get to the park.

Staying on Cedar Key is part of the whole experience. You'll have to expolore options on your own if you wish to deviate.

My understanding is that those condos can accommodate more then 1 person, right? If yes, anybody wants to share a room?

For Park Place, each unit is furnished by the owner, so sleeping arrangements differ. The link provides a tour of each unit.
