Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park where in the springtime wildlife sightings are usually in record numbers and the weather is still bearable as well as the insects.

Janes Scenic Drive

The trek down Janes Scenic Drive truly showcases the parks different natural communities. We will be riding approximately 6 miles then off to one of the railroad trails branching off Jane's Scenic Lane about another 2 miles which is truly a scenic adventure. If we find the trail blocked by a gators, well, I guess we'll just have to do another trail down the road with hopefully no road blocks.

Possible Speed Bump What you may find besides aligators are Buttonbush and Glades Morning Glory which have responded to recent rains and they’re in full bloom. You’ll spot butterflies ranging from the Zebra Longwing and Ruddy Daggerwing to the White Peacock and the Common Buckeye as they flit from plant to plant along the drive. Don’t forget to look up where you’ll spot Red-shouldered hawks, Swallow Tail kites, Northern harriers, Osprey and perhaps even the Everglades Snail Kite. Eastern Diamondback rattlesnakes, the Florida cottonmouth and other reptiles can be seen sunning themselves on the side of the road as well. And of course, keep an eye out for White-tailed deer, black bear, bobcat and the Florida panther.

This cabin or the dock will be our snack/lunch spot. There is an outhouse at this location.

Nice place for a bike ride, friendly people, and perfect biking weather made for a nice day. Still amazed that we walked into an almost empty restaurant and were told that we could not order food because there were too many of us. At least we were allowed to have an adult beverage.

    January 24

  • Marie

Please be sure your bike is tuned up prior to the event and that your have a spare tire in the event of a flat. I'm always asked do we really need the tire? Well my answer is there are a lot of rocks for about the first mile on the dirt road and should always have a spare when you ride.

I won't be able to meet at the carpool location which is at 8:15 but please still come to the carpool location if you want to carpool. I will still organize this and have a contact person with a phone number for all interested in the carpool. I will at Janes Scenic Lane by the ranger station restrooms for the ride since I'll be camping off Everglades City the night before. See you all there!
