QUIZ SHOW (1994) and GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK (2005)

Explore the dark side of America's "Happy Days" with the dramatization of two public scandals that rocked the Eisenhower era.

QUIZ SHOW (1994)

Robert Redford directs Ralph Fiennes, John Turturrow, Rob Morrow, Mira Sorvino and Hank Azaria in this tense retelling of the shocking cheating scandal surrounding a 1950's TV game show.

Dick Goodwin (Morrow) is a newbie lawyer/investigator for the congressional subcommittee charged with regulating the emerging cultural juggernaut of television.

Herb Stempel (Turturrow) is a grey, average-Joe type from the Bronx who is in the middle of an incredible winning streak on "Twenty-One," the most popular quiz show on television.

Charles Van Doren (Fiennes) is a young, handsome, eloquent intellectual with a blue-blood pedigree and multiple Ivy League degrees, who thinks it might be a kick (and maybe a poke in his stuffy father's eye) to go on the tee-vee machine and win a quiz show.

Turns out the producers of "Twenty-One" think that would be a pretty good idea, too. So much so, that they make sure Herb Stempel doesn't stand in the way.

GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK (2005)

George Clooney directs David Strathaim, Jeff Daniels, Robert Downey, Jr., Patricia Clarkson and himself in this taught drama taken directly from the history books.

Back when the press was more watchdog than lapdog, important, epic battles played out between the media and those who violated the public trust.

Joe McCarthy was a Wisconsin Senator craftfully building his career on lies and hate. America was in the middle of the Cold War and the Atomic Age, and McCarthy took full advantage of this atmosphere, using fear to turn Americans against one another.

Edward R. Murrow (Strathaim), a straight-talking journalist who had earned his chops during World War II, takes on Senator McCarthy from the platform of his weekly CBS news magazine "See It Now."

I'm sorry I had to leave so abruptly last night! One of my children called and needed me then, had no choice. I'll be looking forward to the next film with everyone :)

Wow, it seems I've waited almost 20 years to see Quiz Show. Worth the wait? Maybe not THAT long, but it still was a very good film. Good Night and Good Luck was fascinating, especially to me as a foreigner it was a bit of a recent history lesson.

Great stuff - I wanted to watch both of these when they came out but missed them at my city's equivalent of 'The Belcourt' and then everyone always vetoed them at the rental counter! I'd forgotten they existed! Very much looking forward to it :-D
