Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)

Newspeak. Thought Police. Big Brother. Ministry of Truth. Unperson. Crimethink. Doubleplusgood.

War is Peace

Freedom is Slavery

Ignorance is Strength

“He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.”

“Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”

“The best books... are those that tell you what you know already.”

“But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.”

George Orwell’s dystopian novel described a government that denies its people the language with which to talk, and think, about freedom. In the process, “1984” has given us all a more precise and expressive language with which to think and talk about oppression.

“The choice for mankind lies between freedom and happiness and for the great bulk of mankind, happiness is better.”

“We do not merely destroy our enemies; we change them.”

“You asked me once,' said O'Brien, 'what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.”

John Hurt is Winston Smith, who is just trying to get by as a low-level “Ministry of Truth” bureaucrat. Then he meets Julia (Suzanna Hamilton), and they fall in love. Falling in love with anyone but Big Brother is forbidden. O’Brien (Richard Burton, in his final role) is tasked with bringing Winston and Julia back into Big Brother’s fold.
