Hi all! Here is my cell phone number should you need me. I don't know if you can get signal inside the park, but it should be fine up until I get there. [masked]-0367. The park number is (731)[masked] in case you need that, too.

    Deena,

I am a little unclear as far as the water situation. Do we need to carry in what we need or is there a water source close to the campsite to filter?

There is no water at the campsite. (Unless you want to filter out of the Tennessee River, which is right there but I just can't bring myself to drink out of). There is a nice spring fed creek less 1/4 mile from campsite. We will pass it on our hike in . There are small streams all along the trail, just not on our bluff. So, bring extra water, or filter it at the creek, which we pass right before we get to campsite. Hope that wasn't confusing. I'm filling my camelpack, then taking a gravel road about 1/4 of a mile from camp to the creek at dinner time to get my dinner/ cocoa water/ next days water.

There is plenty of water on the way in , but not within a 1/4 mile of our camp. (Except for the river- which you can drink out of if you want to)

I'll be bringing my sweet little trail dog too. Se ya there!!!

Alan I will coming from Mt Juliet so franklin would be going out of the way to get to the park. Google recommends I-40 for me all the way. Plus if I am bringing the dog he will need to ride in my car would not want to dirty someones car with him. Just a note on the dog he is a bit standoffish until he gets to know you but once you are part of the pack he will love you. So if there was anyone nervous around dogs he probably would not work. PS German Shepherd so he can be intimating.

Maggie is the same way, and she did just fine. I kind of prefer that in a dog. I like stand of fish vs. jumping all over and licking me!!!

Ha ha! Darn spell check! I meant standoffish!! I hope your dog doesn't have a stand of fish!!!

NOTICE!!!! We are changing the time to 11:00, so you can take your time and sleep in a little, too. We are still meeting at visitor center. This isn't a long hike in, and we will be doing some hiking without our packs, so there's no need to meet so early.

Thanks, Alan, that's true. The backcountry shelter doesn't have water. There is a creek on the hike in if you want to filter. I am going to fill my camelback, and bring a nalgene full for my dinner/hot cocoa. If anyone needs more, I have a water filter system that I am bringing, and can get to the spring down the trail.

HEY YA"LL! Do you want to change the meetup time to 11:00, instead of 10:00 am? It's such a short hike, we'll have plenty of time. Let me know what you think. Check out this nice description of the trail: http://www.tn.gov/environment/tn_consv/greathikes/pdf/

Details: Meet some new friends from Memphis, the Southern Backpackers, for a backpacking trip to Mousetail Landing State Park. This is a good trip for beginners, or folks wanting to try out their new and improved gear. We'll hike in about six miles, to the Backcountry Shelter, situated on a bluff overlooking the Tennessee River, complete with bunks and woodburning stove. (tents are welcome, tool) We will get to see a gorgeous sunset, while we sit around the campfire. Those wanting to explore can set off for a 4 mile hike to explore the park's other trails, especially the ones they leaf blow in the winter, leaving an amazing, soft, green carpeted forest trial of moss. The shelter only sleeps eight, so let me know if you will be tenting or using the shelter. For more information, contact Deena via http://www.meetup.com/southern-backpacker/

Deena, long time, no hear! And yes, that LBL hike was a fun outing! My wife spoke of it just last weekend on our Big South Fork hike.

I am thinking of leading a very similar hike (to LBL, I think) at Bill Hill Pond State Park early this Spring, down your direction. Might y'all care to co-plan and coordinate with each other? I want to avoid summer/bug season.

I won't be able to join y'all on the Mousetail Landing hike on Feb 23rd, but perhaps others in the group can. Thanks for sharing!

I LOVE Big Hill Pond! I'm in......name your date! I would like to backpack at Long Hunter, too, but have never been there. Wish you would do one there, too! I keep getting new backpack gear, and am always ready to go, but I need more trips this way. Ya'll have done some great trips, but they are just so far for me for a weekend. Hoping to join up with ya'll for some longer trips in summer, when I'm off.
