Cumberland Trail - Tennessee River Gorge Segment - Feb 9 & 10, 2013

Let's hike the southernmost segment of the Cumberland Trail, just outside Chattanooga! The Tennessee River Gorge Segment starts in the Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area and crosses at least 3 bridges and 5 streams over 11 miles to Signal Point on Signal Mountain. There are 3 rustic backcountry campsites. We'll camp at one.

http://www.cumberlandtrail.org/tn_river_gorge.html

We will not be doing the figure-8 loop around Tower Drive in the Prentice Cooper WMA, which is also shown and described at the above link, so ignore that part.  We probably will park at the official parking area on Tower Drive and hike north/east past the Indian Rock House and Stone Door, and toward Signal Point.  We will pass Lawson Rock Overlook, Mushroom Rock, and Edwards Point Overlook during the weekend.

The CTC site rates this segment as "easy, moderate, difficult," so we'll have some of each. But due to the relatively short mileage, this should be a very do-able hike for most folks.  Daylight hours already are getting longer, so this may allow for some leisurely walking, though we will cross at least one major gorge at Suck Creek/North Suck Creek.  This is one of the most popular portions of the entire CT.

We can "do lunch" on Sunday afternoon in Chattanooga or maybe stop for the Millers Grocery Sunday buffet in Christiana on the way home, but only if we get there by 2:00 p.m.

UPDATE:  We'll likely START at Signal Point and END in Prentice Cooper (the opposite of the "START" and "END" notations on the above map).

ok, what is it with all these Good to See You. Is that something you send or does it just pop up when I got on here. I don't keep up with all the stuff meetup adds...lol

    February 11, 2013

    • Raymond M.

Right. It's a gimmick that Meetup added recently. Must be trying to compete with Facebook by generating traffic to increase ad revenues, I suppose. Personally, I don't do the "Good to see you" button at all.

Trip was awesome thanks Raymond for setting it up. Great group of people enjoyed getting to know everyone and the best part was being able to pick the brains of the depth of experienced represented. No mishaps except the one unscheduled swim and a few things that were stomped on around the campfire :-) Lunch afterward was delish..
Looking forward to the next trip.

I'm still upset that I didn't get to see the unscheduled swim with my own eyes and that no one rushed over with cameras to establish proof. As they say, "no pics = did not happen." tee hee

I'm meeting everyone at the TDOT place in Murfreesboro. However, I want to take my own car, since I have the dog, and need to get back on Sunday. I can't stop and eat on way home.....i have a much longer drive than you guys!! Someone can ride with me to keep me company if they want.

    February 9, 2013

  • Raymond M.

Okay, as I have it, Al & Jody are riding in Al's car from Nashville. Mike and Eddie and Deena (and doggie) and Faith are riding in Faith's car from Murfreesboro. All will meet me and our shuttler at the Tower Road trailhead in Prentice Cooper in the morning at or about 10:30 Central Time, leaving all three vehicles there and hikers being shuttled to Signal Point to start hike. Raymond, Faith, Jody, and Deena are doing the communal meal together.

I'm in Chattanooga tonight at my shuttle friends' home. Deena, just sent you an email, so call me when you can tonight. Nice to see Al and Deena are welcome late comers! I spoke with Al already. I recommend drivers bring extra keys to their cars in case we need to shuttle one in addition to my truck. Let's go hiking!

Lord have mercy, ya'll have me confused with the meetup location. Is this exit 55A off of I-24, coming from Nashville? I'm from Memphis, ya'll. Speak Elvis to me, so I don't miss you in the morning, "leaving me lonely". Anyone meeting in Nashville? Somone can ride with me.

I am coming from Memphis, so am not familiar with your area at all. Where is the meetup location to carpool? I can drive, and have plenty of room.

WAIT FOR ME!!!!! WAIT FOR ME!!!!! My Arkansas Meetup is off, due to storms. I'm already packed, so I'm coming with ya'll! But I need someone to ride with me, please.

so if we're coming from Nashville, where exactly are we meeting???
(I've got it from I-24, to exit 55) Exit 55 A or B??? then what??? specific location, business??

    February 8, 2013

  • Al B.

Rain Man: if you stay in East TN, give me a call and I can coordinate w/Jody.

    February 8, 2013

  • Michael P.

Just to be clear exit 55 off 840 is that correct?

    February 7, 2013

  • Michael P.

Please clarify, exit 53 or 55 on 840? As far as dinner I usually do freeze dried not the best tasting but quick, easy and light. I will probably be drooling over ya'll but at least for this trip I will stick with what I know is tried and true.

    • Raymond M.

On Google maps, you might have to zoom in a bit for the "Transportation Dept" label and icon to show up.

      February 7, 2013

    • Eddy and S.

Faith, since you live in M'boro please confirm which exit we need to use.

      February 7, 2013

  • jody

is anyone meeting in nashville? if not, i will meet you guys jn mboro. what time are we meeting?

    February 7, 2013

    • Raymond M.

Jody, I'm leaving for east Tennessee this morning, for two days of work. Although not 100% sure, I'm likely to stay Friday night with my friends who are doing shuttling for us, and meet y'all at the trailhead. I will confirm and let y'all know for sure later, today or tomorrow. But if I come home Friday night, you can ride from Nashville with me. Otherwise, plan on meeting everyone else in Murfreesboro as per Faith.

      February 7, 2013

  • Michael P.

yes I will be meeting at exit 53A off 840. Are we all going to fit in one car? Looking forward to the hike have not been backpacking since November I am way past overdue. Weather is looking great on Saturday should be good time.

    February 6, 2013

    • Raymond M.

I think Exit 53 is the I-24 exit. I think Faith means Exit 55, which is the Hwy 41/70S exit and has the TDOT parking lot.

Hamhocker isn't going to make this trip so it is just me

    February 6, 2013

Raymond, were you planning on leaving a car at Signal Point? I noticed this on the link you posted above. "The National Park Service recently closed the Signal Point Parking area after 10pm, and vehicles will be impounded if left after 10pm"

    January 31, 2013

    • Raymond M.

I have friends who live close by on Signal Mountain and they already have volunteered to move a vehicle and/or shuttle a vehicle or hiker. I figured I'd wait til closer to the date to decide exactly how to work it. Might hike from opposite directions. I did see that notice, but thanks for bringing it up in case I hadn't.

      never hurts to ask

      February 4, 2013

  • Eddy and S.

Raymond, meeting at your house is out of our way. Can a meeting place be setup in M'boro?

    January 30, 2013

    • Raymond M.

No problem at all. Meetup simply wants me to plug in a place, so I most often default to my house, but as folks sign up we pick the place we really want. In this case, Faith is in Murfreesboro and Michael is coming down 840 from Mt. Juliet/Lebanon area, so I think we can pick a place and time down there, closer to the weekend. Faith, what sayest thou?

      January 30, 2013

    • Eddy and S.

we will be going I-840 to I-24 also
