"Quick 'n Easy" overnighter on the Volunteer Trail

  • to

  • Long Hunter State Park

2910 Hobson Pike, Hermitage, TN (map)

    36.107889 -86.539778

  • Meet at the trailhead unless carpooling is needed
  • As always, please don't RSVP simply to say "No".

Let's enjoy the last weekend of winter with a quick hike of the Volunteer trail (In the city limits of NASHVILLE!).  We'll camp at the backcountry site along Percy Priest Lake.  Soon spring will arrive and "party boats" will destroy any semblance of wilderness to be experienced.

Meet at the trailhead at 4:30pm and then hike in.  We should be back out by 10ish on sunday morning.  Breakfast could be arranged if anyone is interested.

The trail is 5.5 miles in to the campsite, which should require a little use of the headlamps.  If you've never tried night hiking before, this would be a great opportunity to learn.  We should have an easy time finding some firewood and having a little campfire!

This should be an EASY hike!  Have some new gear to try out?  New to backpacking and uncomfortable heading into the deep wilderness?  This is the trip for you!

Please post a message if you may need to borrow gear, need a ride there, etc.

We can cook over the campfire or stoves or both (or you can hike in a pre-made sandwich!)  We'll share backpacking stories around the fire, chat about gear and food, and generally enjoy some good company.

Look forward to seeing you there.  Message me if you have any questions!

No Problem, Danny and I did the Day loop! we had a great time. We both agreed that it was a great hike, and happily roasted a couple of marshmallows on our campstove once we got home. If you organize any other over nighters please let me know, i really wanna a few in a group setting...

Hi everyone, thought I'd let you know what happened yesterday. Permits must now be done in person at LongHunter and they are first come first served. I arrived at the park in the afternoon and when I called in the ranger told me all the sites were full, which many of you were also able to find out, thanks. The reason for this was that the weather was nicer than expected AND that one group had apparently decided to camp out for TWO nights. I was quite amazed to hear that. I want to apologize to all of you for cancelling so late, and for not previously communicating that this was a possibility. (but honestly never figured it would be full!)

I guess this is why we typically like to go to locations in the deep wilderness where we don't have these problems.

I look forward to seeing y'all on other trips.

thats the one thing that is so agrivating about this park... it is a great hike and the camp sites are wonderful... but I think they need to have a system set up so that peopl can call and reserve a camp site . there is nothing more agrivating than geting all packed up drive all the way there only to be refused a permit...I was actualy harrased by three rangers one time becos while I was waiting on my ride to pick me up in the parking area .I got droped off when I went for an overnight hike and I had my permit and everything. I love this park but I feal that it is very poorly operated.

Hey guys, I ended up going to Long Hunter yesterday and just got back. You might already know this but thought I'd share just in case: they've changed the backcountry permitting process a bit. There is no longer a drop box for permits outside of the visitor center, you have to go inside. Since they're closed on the weekends, you'll need to call the Ranger on duty (Ranger Blackwell tomorrow) at[masked] to coordinate meeting him to pick up a permit for the camp site and vehicle tags for all vehicles that will be parked at the trailhead. And the ticks are definitely out on the trail...don't forget the bug spray :)

Thanks David, I talked to the park today, the biggest problem is that you have to have all the vehicles listed on the permit, so if you are late you'll have to do your own permit I guess?

That's kind of what I gathered, but she didn't seem certain on this point (the ranger was off today so she wasn't able to nail this down for sure). The first group could always sign everyone up and get the appropriate vehicle tags and stash them for everyone to pickup, or it might be easier to just meet up individually with the ranger as each group arrives depending on the ranger's availability.

I'm actually going to be doing this hike this Friday and heading back Saturday ( I live just a few mins from this trail and do it pretty regularly). If anyone is interested in Friday night, I'll probably be at campsite 2 if it's available when I get in. Also, if you have a telescoping (or otherwise packable fishing rod) I have really good luck fishing just steps from campsites one and two.
