Anyone interested in going to Damascus for Trail Days? Trail Days is the celebration of the Appalachian Trail, which runs right down the main street of Damascus. This year the celebration is May 17-19. http://www.traildays.us/
As things stand now, it's just Rain Man and wife, Stitch, but others are welcome. Here's the tentative itinerary:
Friday: Drive to Mountain Harbour B&B/Hostel on US Hwy 19E near the NC border. Spend night and enjoy their famous breakfast with other B&B guests and AT hikers on Saturday morning.
Saturday: Drive to nearby Valle Crucis, NC after breakfast to see the original Mast General Store (on National Register of Historic Places) on the way to Damascus and Trail Days. At Trail Days, gawk at all the AT hikers and vendors. Saturday night either camp in TOW's front yard or leave and find place to stay along I-81.
Sunday, leisurely make way back to Nashville.
Here's what Wikipedia says about that Mast:
"The Mast General Store, located in Historic Valle Crucis, is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places as one of the best remaining examples of an old country general store. It is still the center of the community housing the post office (Valle Crucis, NC 28691) and offering coffee for 5¢ on the honor system. It remains true to the old-time general store from the 19th century by offering items that its neighbors might need, as well as products of interest to travelers and other visitors. ..."
