Backpacking overnight to stone door!

Hey gang!

Want to head out to savage gulf and enjoy an overnight! Heres the plan:

we can meet at the Hickory Hollow target at 8am, then head out to savage gulf.

I have a map down below, but we will start at the stone door ranger station, located near bersheba springs off 56. we will pick up the stone door trail, and follow it down to big creek gulf trail, ending at the alum gap campsite. On the way, we will be taking a side hike to ranger creek falls (i havent been there yet), and check it out. It will make the first day about a 5.5 miler or so. On sunday morning, i was wanting to hit the little loop to check out greeter falls, then get back up on to the rim and head back to the cars on laurel trail. Sunday total milage should be another 5.5 miles, making an 11 mile total. The trails are for intermediate hikers, with the climb out on sunday a little harder, but a short climb (.75 miles?). Its going to be wonderful cool weather, so pack for cold weather camping. We will talk more in detail at the november meeting on thursday, and i welcome all questions concerning the trip.

I cant wait! should be a blast.

Thanks so much Frank for a great backpacking experience (I'm going to give you lots of stars despite the unfortunate s'mores situation!) Thanks Ming for posting your shots, Sandy and David for driving and everyone for contributing to the fun! Peace!

For those who like maps, I saw that REI has "South Cumberland" maps in the free slots near customer service. I did not open them up, but they appear to be the same maps you get at the ranger station.

Our Sunday crew reported that Big Creek was too high and fast to cross to go to Ranger Falls. Just FYI. With no rain all this week, it may be fine for this weekend's trip.

Here are directions: From Nashville take I-24 towards Chattanooga. Take Exit #127 and go left towards Altamont for 18 miles on Hwy 50. Hwy 50 ends at a "T" in Altamont. Turn left on Hwy 56 in Altamount towards Beersheba Springs and go 5.7 miles. There will be a sign on the right for the Stone Door. Turn right there and go 1.6 miles to the parking area for the ranger station, trailhead, and campsite. For us it was 109 miles from our home. I hope this helps.

    Frank:
Will it be possible to borrow a lightweight tent?

Do we have the details on this trip yet? e.g. which trails, how far, difficulty, departure and return times.

Hi- I'm new to the group and not sure what the group policy is on hike cancelations due to weather. I'll be driving up to Savage Gulf from Atlanta for the Stone Door hike, would hate for the hike to be cancelled due to rain while I'm in route. Also, is the meeting time of 8A in the Nashville area or at Savage Gulf on Nov 7? - thanks JJ
