Beginner's trip on the Cumberland Trail Piney River Segment

  • January 18, 2014 · 8:00 AM
  • Myers Home

Leave Saturday morning and travel about 2.5 hrs to the trailhead. The trail is about 10 miles total. We'll hike in Saturday, spend the night and hike out Sunday.  We will split into two groups, one parking on each end, and meet in the middle and swap car keys.  We will probably stop on the way home for dinner.

Debbie Cathleen, hope you can use it. I am sorry about the messed up zipper on the lid part. Feel free to try to repair it any way you want. Maybe sewing would work. I just didn't see it until it was too late to do it myself before I brought it to the meeting. Wish I was going with you all. I know you will have a great time!

Sorry gang--really wanted to go on this trip, but now I have a family obligation on Saturday and Sunday that I've got to take care of. Y'all have fun!

Hello Debbie, I have an REI Half Dome tent(2 person) tent I'll be glad to lend you. David's will have more room though. I also have a gregory jade small women's backpack I won't be using. I think it's 35L. I'm a short person so you might need to try it on before deciding to use it.

You'll want to take Ellen's tent then - 5 lb vs 7 lb =) Depending on the weather and packing 2 sleeping bags + food + clothes (if it's cold), 35L might be a bit small, no? I also have a 50L Kelty Redwing pack extra (didn't list it at first because I thought THAT might be a bit small =)

      January 5, 2014

    • Debbie C.

David, I will have 2 packs and a tent. I think I am good for gear, but I will have to figure that out for sure this weekend. Thanks so much for all your generous offers.

      January 10, 2014

  • Ellen F.

Debbie Cathleen, I plan to be at the meeting on Sat., but due to a neck problem, I won't be going on the hike. I'll bring the pack to the meeting.

    January 7, 2014

    • Debbie C.

I'm sorry to hear that :( But thank you for bringing the pack! I hope you feel better!

      January 10, 2014

  • Raymond M.

I slept in my backyard last night and plan to do the same tonight. It's a great way to practice. You can learn to tweak your gear and how you do and arrange things. Plus, if things aren't working, you can bail-out into a warm bed! :)

I would be doing that but I am waiting on my hammock an underquilt to show up since I am having mods done to them

Debbie Cathleen, I'll be glad to meet you somewhere. I live in Hendersonville. Just get in touch and we'll work something out.

    January 6, 2014

    • Debbie C.

I am going to try hard to make it to the tail end of the REI meeting. Raymond has given me a tent and a small pack to borrow, so all I'll need is just a pad and a women's size pack. Thank you so much!

      January 6, 2014

  • Ellen F.

I plan to be at the meeting Sat. and I'll bring the tent and pack. You can take them and see if either of them will work for you. Do you have sleep pads to go under the sleeping bags for comfort and more warmth?

    January 5, 2014

    • Debbie C.

Ellen, when and where is the meeting? Not sure if I'll be able to make it with kids basketball games going on.

      January 6, 2014

    • Debbie C.

I just saw the post for the meeting. Unfortunately we have a bball game right at 2! I can probably dart out there after the game, wouldn't be there till at least 3:15. Otherwise I can message you and meet you somewhere else. I do have one sleeping pad, and David had one for me to borrow too.

Depending on the temperature in a few weeks, you might also want to have some sort of sleeping pad to get yourself off the ground. I also have one extra Thermarest Neo Air Trekker air pad if want also. You might be able to scrounge another from someone else in the group. And if you need a kettle for boiling water for food, I have an extra GSI kettlist.

(usually go backpacking with the gf, so lots of extra gear when I'm going on my own =)

      1 · January 5, 2014

    • Debbie C.

David, thanks for offering all this. I will take you up on the offers! I already have one air pad so will need another as well. As this is our first backpacking trip I have NO equipment other than sleeping bags. I also forgot that we will need to eat! I am so used to just day hiking and eating a dinner after the hike!

      January 5, 2014

  • Raymond M.

Unless we arrange some other type of shuttle, we will most likely split into two groups, one hiking from each end. We'll meet in the middle to camp for the night and exchange car keys. If you need to cancel, that's fine, just please do so ASAP rather than simply being a "no show." For you new folks, we usually stop somewhere for dinner on the way home.
