Our Regular Monthly Meet - Knots & Lashings for Beginners

  • March 10, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • REI

Knots and Lashings for Beginners.  Guest Speaker Bill Martin, with many years of Boy Scout leading.  Bring some rope or cord to practice as Bill explains and demonstrates.

We will also discuss trips planned for the rest of the year.  We do take suggestions and requests!

NOTE:  This meeting (March 10) is the start of Spring Break week for many schools.  Also, it's the day after Daylight Savings Time starts.  Just FYI.

All members who would like to have dinner beforehand are welcome to join at 6:00 at the Ruby Tuesday restaurant next door to REI.  Ask for the "backpacking group."

Please DO NOT RSVP merely to say "no."  It fills up the organizers' inboxes with needless, irrelevant emails.  Thanks!  If you RSVP "yes" for an over-nighter, then send the hike organizer(s) your cell number immediately.  We appreciate your help!

One of the largest and most participatory of our meets ever! Good topic and good job, Bill! Thanks! Now we all have 3 solid, useful knots for most things needed in the woods.

Are there any plans to do a beginner's backpacking trip or a backpacking class of some type? Newbies such as myself would love to learn from some more experienced folks!

Hi Al, I plan to be at the meeting on Monday and would love to join you and the others afterwards. Haven't been to any day or overnight backpacking and would love learn more about it and do it. Thank for holding a meeting for novices like us. :-)

Enjoyed meeting and chatting with everyone last night. I didn't get a chance to speak with all in attendance, so maybe next time... As much as I enjoyed meeting everyone, I must admit the most entertaining thing actually occurred after the meeting. I purchased a new sleeping pad while I was there -- (why is it can't walk into REI without buying something???) watching the guy in front of me in the checkout line getting ready to go backpacking. He stated "never been but it's all or nothing" as I chuckled and proceeded to watch the cashier ring up a tent, and two of everything....trekking poles, sleeping bags & pads, Marmot rain gear, Columbia pants, etc....you get the picture. For a total of nearly $3800! He wasn't an REI member so I generously offered to let him use my membership number. I was disappointed when he decided to join the coop.

Hope to see y'all on the trail soon!
    Terry

Sorry, I not able to make the meeting. Could you please let me know when the light backpacking meeting is scheduled? Thank you!

Thought I could make it, but I'm dragging. With the time change, I woke up at the equivalent of 4 a.m. It's early bedtime for me tonight. I too want to partake in some beginning backpacking trips.

Since my +2 are kids, should I un-RSVP them so others can get in this (but I still have to drag them along)?
