This should be a fun overnighter at one of Nashville's closest getaways. Let's meet up saturday morning and drive 2 hours to South Cumberland State Park (Savage Gulf).
Sat: We'll start out getting our permits at the Stone Door Ranger Station. We'll hike the Stone Door trail and descend down into the Gulf. We'll follow the Big Creek Gulf trail to its end at Alum Gap campsite. We'll claim spots and set up camp before hiking out to Greeter Falls loop. Total miles should be 5 with packs and 3 without packs.
Sunday: Pack up and return to the Stone Door trailhead via the Big Creek Rim trail. Mileage Sunday will be approx 4 miles.
The terrain down in the Gulf is quite challenging (Rocky) and the climb back up the rim will get the heart-rates up. However, the rest of this trip will be pretty mild. The variable will be weather, up on the plateau winter weather can occur when mild conditions happen in Nashville. Let's hope for some pretty snow conditions! You should have prior backpacking experience to go on this winter trip.
