This trip will be based on availability of the sites in the Smokies. Now that you must make a reservation and pay UP FRONT - If you RSVP "Yes" then you are committing to pay the $8 fee even if you do not attend. (unless someone else takes your place)
The plan is to leave after work Friday Mar 7th and drive over to the Smokies. We'll camp at Campsite 93 just in from Twenty Mile Ranger station (about 2 miles night hiking - not much elevation gain).
Saturday we will climb up to the AT ridgeline (gain 3000 ft) and visit the Shuckstack firetower. We will then follow the AT north and link up with the Gregory Bald trail to Gregory Bald. We will arrive at campsite 13 (near the bald) for the night after a 10 mile day. The bald is at about 5000 ft.
Sunday we will descend 3000ft back down to the cars over about 7 mi.
Trip total should be about 17-18 miles total and some drastic elevation gain Sat morning [masked] feet up).
Weather is unpredictable at high elevations in March - could be snow or sun. Please be prepared for any conditions!
