Eagle Bluff Section of Cumberland Trail

Let's hike the 11.7 mile section of the Cumberland Trail north out of Caryville, TN off I-75 north of Knoxville.  This section is the Eagle Bluff section and runs from the Bruce Gap Road Trailhead in Cove Lake State Park to the Tank Springs Trailhead along U.S. Hwy 25W.

We will leave Saturday morning and return Sunday evening.

This section is described as "strenuous" and "one of the most geologically varied and scenic trails in east Tennessee."  It has 3,446 feet of total climbing, with some "rock climbing" (though there is a by-pass route).  We will camp along the trail.

Link to Trail Description.

If you are driving, they do ask you to register for over-night parking.  Link for over-night registration.

If you sign up, please send your cell number to Raymond ASAP.  Thanks!

Anyone wanting to drive over Friday evening could stay at Cove Lake State Park.  Here's the link, for more info.

Questions?  Suggestions?

P.S.  NOTE:  This trip was originally posted as going to Linville Gorge, NC, but the quota of permits was filled, so we'll re-arrange that trip for the fall, perhaps when the leaves are changing colors.

After two days of hiking through poison ivy, I thought some of you might enjoy this quiz--

I got 50/55 correct, though I should have defaulted toward the "false positive" when in doubt, as I do in the woods, to avoid the stuff. My shins are itching today!

Sounds good! I am looking forward to it. Any idea of return time? Late afternoon or late evening? Thanks.

Any idea what time we will depart Saturday? I heard talk of leaving at 6 am which is a little daunting.

6:00 was for the hike in NC. But for this hike, I posted 7:30. Less daunting. :)

Hi guys! I was going to join you (from East of LInville) but I see that the quota of permits was filled… alas! I would love to go to Linville in the fall…. the colors are AMAZING!!! Perhaps we can look into picking a date and seeing if one can get permits in advance? I really enjoyed the Roan Mtn. trip we did last summer. Happy hiking/backpacking!!!

I'm bring Lisa! :) she doesn't get off until 6 on Friday so we will need to meet 615 or 630. Also we will need to return Sunday. Hopefully we can find a shortcut trail and not impact your Monday.

What about Frozen Head? We can backpack about four miles to campsite then put down stuff and hike difficult hike. They have great "strenuous" hikes.
