An orientation to back country travel with an emphasis on carrying just what is needed and affordability.
The class will provide an overview of the trail etiquette and gear needed to comfortably hike and spend an overnight in the back country with minimal environmental impact. Gear typically carried by an Appalachian Trail hiker (which also works for weekenders) will be demonstrated. Comparisons of “traditional”, “lightweight”, and “ultralight” hiking gear will be examined. Examples of “do-it-yourself” projects will be demonstrated. Menu planning, first aid supplies and on-line resources will be discussed. Participants will be provided with resources to streamline their gear selection and trip planning processes.
When: September 13, 2014 ----- 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
