Linville Gorge, NC - Fall Colors hike.

Let's hike the famous and famously rugged Linville Gorge in North Carolina and see some fall colors (hopefully). We have hard-to-get reservations for 10.

Leave early Saturday morning, hike the Babel Tower Trail 1.3 miles (800' descent) into the gorge during the afternoon. Camp along Linville Gorge River on the Linville Gorge Trail.

Sunday, hike on the Linville Gorge Trail along the river and camp in the gorge again near the Pinch In Trail.

Monday morning, hike the Pinch In Trail 1.5 miles (1,700' ascent!) out of the gorge and drive home that afternoon.

The total hike mileage is very approximately 12 miles.  However, guides and experienced hikers say to DOUBLE the mileage to get an idea of how to compare to other trails.  So, I am being conservative and mentally calculating this as a 24-mile hike.

Check back for further details.

Well, once again your fearless leader has ordered up a weekend of phenomenally perfect backpacking weather. So far as I know, we're all set to go. See y'all in the morning. Give a shout if anyone has any last-minute questions.

Are you all carpooling? Can I be picked up at the Cracker Barrel at I40 in Crossville?

To be determined. Likely around 8:00ish. Mendy, have you sent me your cell number and email address?

I have just posted some more details about which trails we hike on which days, and some mileage details. I will be out of town from tonight (Thursday) until late Monday afternoon. If you need me, best way to reach is by my cell phone. You should all have the number now, but if needed ask Cynthia. Keep your fingers crossed for Fall colors!

Whats the best map for the area? The nat geo map?

    • Raymond M.

No. In fact, this is one time the NatGeo map has a bad reputation. The Forest Service sells a good map for Linville Gorge.

I am starting a new job and may have to work this weekend, but still not sure yet. I should know in the beginning of October and will update my RSVP if necessary.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
