im going to be heading out to my favorite place in Tennessee, the Virgin Falls Pocket Wilderness near Sparta, TN. We will get an early start on Saturday morning, hike in to the falls, camp for the night, then hike out the next day. A truly spectacular area, with lots of side hikes to Sheep Cave falls, and Big Branch falls, as well as checking out the Caney Fork river. I cant wait to get out there!
The hike to Virgin Falls is about four miles, with a half mile stretch that sports a four hundred foot plus elevation change! Slow going heading down into the falls, as well as coming out. Its a great hike that takes between 2 1/2 - 4 hours one way. Nice challenging beginner/ intermediate trip. Plenty of side hikes and loops to add to the mileage if you feel so inclined.
Also, I would like to ask for your assistance. Whenever I go there, I bring a kitchen size trash bag, and try to pick up trash, clean out the fire pits, and leave the area better than I found it. Unfortunately, the park tends to get overused, and I have yet to have less than an overflowing trash bag when I hike out! Its definately not mandatory, but if you feel like it I would love to have some extra muscle in taking out some more trash!
