Strenuous Trip Planned for last weekend of Feb,
Location to be determined but if good snowy weather most likely Roan Mtn/Highlands.
If not winter weather, we could pick from other locations, Smokies, Linville Gorge, Black Mountains, Plott Balsams, Big South Fork.
Leave Nashville friday night, arrive back Sun night. Expect up to 5 hour drive from carpool area in Lebanon.
When we arrive, we can hike up the nicely graded 1.5 miles to the roan high knob shelter (highest shelter on the AT) it has a loft and a door! If we are feeling lazy we could also stay the night at the Mountain Harbor Hostel - (and eat their breakfast saturday morning?) Saturday if feeling adventurous we could trek out the the summit of Roan High Bluff for a great view (but that would be 3 mi round trip). We will descend back down to Carvers Gap and continue on to the overmountain shelter, or if the weather is nice, camp on an exposed bald a little further on. Sunday we'll complete the trek by getting up early and hiking over "the humps" and back down to the Mountain Harbor Hostel (19E). We'll have to go pick up the car at the top before heading home (with a stop for food on the way?)
If we have deep snow then the trip will be more conservative. Most likely there won't be much and we can be more aggressive.
Total trip mileage should be around 15-20mi, or 20-25mi if we do Roan High Knob. There are a couple of significant climbs that will have us shedding layers!
I assure you that more details will follow, but quite a few people have expressed interest. Sign up to let me know if you want to go!
