What is that, you might ask? Well, it is a fast paced exciting bike race that will draw numerous Bicyclists to Cedar Hill Park in Madison, TN on Nov 2. If you are lolling for a chance to use that action setting on your camera you need to check this out.

Anyone get any good shots? I was there early to help set up, but had to work during the races themselves. Would love to see some of what I missed!

Please remember that the cyclists who are participating are RACING, not taking a leisurely drive. Position yourselves to take photographs where you will NOT inconvenience the racers and stay in designated areas out of the way of the actual racing. If you position yourselves strategically along the course you will get some awesome action/motion shots...

    Is this a closed-track or open-road race?
Also, how close to the cyclist will we be able to get?

Close enough to feed them a doughnut off a fishing line (cf. some of the pics at the gallery I linked to). But as the other reply notes, this is a race, so please stay behind the tape, or, where the course is not taped or otherwise marked, be mindful of the lines the racers are using. There may be a 12-foot wide section that only has one rideable line. Come out and enjoy the insanity! The first race starts at 10AM, with the last races (Children's events and an open class) at 3:30 and 3:45. Races will run continuously from the first event on. For those posting via social media, #KCRC is the event hashtag. Keep Calm and Race Cross!

Cyclocross races run on a lap that takes anywhere btwn 5-10 minutes/lap. A rough comparison is that is something like "steeplechase for bicycles," involving bikes that look much like road bikes on off-road terrain, often in demanding conditions (as it is a fall and winter sport). There are also sections and barriers that will force most racers to dismount their bikes, run across the obstacles, and then remount the bikes at speed. A great sport for dynamic photography!

The short laps, conditions, and challenges involved in the sport give a photographer a variety of opportunities. While the speeds can be high, cyclocross races are generally slower than road events, thus allowing more time for framing and composition. Here's a gallery via echelonphoto from last year's event--but remember, the more adverse the conditions, the better the photography!: http://echelonphoto.smugmug.com...

    All the best,
