Ice covered lighthouses and ice formations in South Haven and St.Joseph Mi.

• Lets capture the beauty and majesty of Lake Michigan's lighthouses covered in ice and snow.

The focus of this workshop will be on how the dramatic winter weather changes the light, color and shape of the ice covered lighthouses and landscapes.

We will be leaving Ann Arbor Saturday morning to arrive at our hotel in South Haven by 2 pm. After a quick meet and greet we will head out to start shooting concentrating on ice shapes and formations finishing up with sunset images of the South Haven lighthouse. We will then head back to the Hotel warm up, grab some dinner and go over the days shoot and Sundays itinerary.

Sunday we will leave South Haven around 6 am for St.Joseph arriving in time to shoot the sunrise at the St.Joseph lighthouse.(its only a 30 minute drive from South Haven to St. Joseph).

After sunrise turns to daylight we will then focus our attention to the ice covered pier and snow covered landscape.

This time of year the weather and light can change quickly and be very dramatic so be prepared for anything.Bring your warmest clothes, boots and gloves. It also helps to have an extra camera battery for back up,due to the cold weather and of course plenty of memory cards.

The cost of this workshop covers professional one on one instruction and critique only. Hotel, meals and other expenses are the responsibility of the participants.

As always feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thanx

Tom and Joel

Loved this trip...was by far one of the coolest things I've done. Now I have no need to conquer Mt. Everest, lol. The group of people who came were so fun, I'm thankful to now call them friends. The only bummer was the frightened sun that was too scared to venture out in the cold with us...I was looking forward to the lesson on how the light hits the ice and what angles to shoot it at - perhaps we can work that in locally on a sunny day.

    3 · January 20, 2014

    • Thomas N.

We can do that..suggest something on the meet up page.get the conversation going

      January 20, 2014

    • Janet L.

Tina, the sun peeked out a few times in Grand Haven and it definitely makes the ice appear differently so I would welcome an opportunity to meet up again on a sunnier (and warmer) day :).

Thank You, Thomas and Joel for the great Meetup. I want to compliment both of you for taking the time to make sure everyone's interests were acknowledged, the time to look at everyone's images with GENIUNE feedback and to keep an eye out for every everyone's safety. Your excitement about the shoot and your helpfulness made us all feel completely comfortable. I just viewed all the uploads and ALL of them were ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. Thank you again.

I had a great time despite the weather. Cafe was too small for our needs but the alternate spot worked great. Hotel was also nice that you recommended and great price. I appreciated the pre - outing comments at lunch which reminded me what to think about - color, shapes and thirds. Especially appreciated the critique and comments after shooting. Feedback and encouragement are always welcome! Look forward to future meetups.

The best weather was grand haven. Felt downright balmy at times after south haven. I didn't even have a hood or hat on part of the time. Shutterbugs cancelled for monday. Guess we are the dedicated (or foolhardy) ones :).

ok were getting close, a couple quick questions...
it looks like everyone has rides figured out?
    gear packed and ready?
Batteries charged, memory cards cleaned out,tri-pod,warm clothes.
As far as weather, the forecast keeps changing..typical Michigan weather. Also being on the lake it can change fast.
let me know if you have any questions, and feel free to call if needed.

Wind which is predicted will hopefully yield some action photos if there is any water still (vs. ice) near the lighthouse :).

      1 · January 13, 2014

    Hi guys here's a heads up on what we will be covering;
When we arrive in Saint Joseph/cafe Tosi we will go over camera equipment, camera settings such as ISO,white balance, aperture, shutter speed, lens choice and image composition. We will then head over to the lighthouse.
Depending on light and weather Joel and I will focus on shapes and patterns and how light impacts the image working as a group as we go.
We will then walk our way over to the pier and work with leading lines, how color impacts the image and patterns in the ice.As you shoot look for a spot you would like to set up for sunset images. You want to set your tri-pod up about and hour prior to sunset to capture the "twilight hour" its amazing how much color your camera sensor will pick up that our eyes don't see.
After the sun fades about an 1/2 hour after sunset we will pack up and head to the hotel in South Haven 20 min. away,we can make dinner plans then. After dinner we will go over the days images and Sunday's itinerary.

Thanks for the details and email... so excited! I hope we have some good ice to photograph - yes looks like they expect snow this week. yeah. Are the new photos you posted ones you took last weekend?

      1 · January 13, 2014

I just thought of a very important item to bring. Your battery charger for your camera, the cold kills the battery faster than normal so you will want to charge it at night. Also bring a laptop if you have one.

    January 13, 2014

  • Tina Lynn S.

I'd like to carpool or follow you out, so send me your address and what time to be at your place. Thanks

And yes, I have yak-trax and was going to bring them. I've used them for running in the winter weather - very helpful for traction.

    January 12, 2014

    • Keith k.

Hi, i was interested in carpooling and coming form the Troy area, do you know if anyone is carpooling form that area?

      January 13, 2014

  • Thomas N.

I have been looking at places to purchase YakTrax..I found them at Target, Walmart, Dick's, amazon. Every review I read said to get them! I am planning more winter workshops and meetups so you will have the opportunity to use them, also they say their great for walking the dog or running.

    January 12, 2014

  • Thomas N.

Who is planning on carpooling from Ann Arbor and riding together?
I live on north main and you can park here and leave from here. Im riding with Joel or we can team up with someone.
    Its a short 2hr drive.

    January 11, 2014

    • Janet L.

I will be driving separately due to my plans to go through Jenison on the way back. I'll meet you at the coffee shop at 2 unless I hear otherwise.

I want to say this IT WAS VERY SLIPPERY!!! I recommend picking up a pair of YakTrax to go on your boots to grip the ice.

    January 8, 2014

  • Tina Lynn S.

Wahoo...just signed up. I'm happy to carpool or follow along myself. Tammie... I'm happy to bunk up or go it alone - are you all at the baymont? Might be able to find a good deal on hotwire

    1 · January 7, 2014

    • Janet L.

I got a king at the Baymont for around $60 just going through their reservation system. I have to drive separate as I'm going through Grand Rapids on the way back to see my mom. I have two long lenses...18-200 and a heavier, longer lens which generally needs a tripod. You are welcome to try whichever one I'm not using if you'd like.

      1 · January 7, 2014

  • Tina Lynn S.

Hey Tom .... love the photos provided. What lens did you shoot with, I'm wondering how close we can physically get to the lighthouses and if we need a long lens. I have a full frame Nikon with a lens length of 70 so I'm wondering if I should rent at 200 or more

    January 7, 2014

    • Thomas N.

Hi Tina thanx for signing up! We can get fairly close depending on ice build up. If you have a telephoto lens bring it along for the "reach".

      January 7, 2014

    • Thomas N.

Also Joel will be focusing on macro and ice formations and shapes and how light reflects off the snow and ice.this is going to be a one on one instructional workshop so come with lots of questions..

      January 7, 2014

  • Tina Lynn S.

would love to capture images like this - I'm guess it will be cold enough with this week frigid temps...but what if we get a warm up? Also...anybody car pooling from Ann Arbor? Thinkin of joining in the fun.

  • Thomas N.

OK hopefully this is the last "major" change to this workshop.
We will meet at Cafe Tossi in St. Joseph shoot in St. Joseph then head to South Haven for hotel and dinner.

    December 16, 2013

  • Thomas N.

So I'm looking for places to meet in St. Joseph instead of South Haven. Same shooting plan we will drive to the hotel after sunset.

    December 16, 2013

  • Tammie A.

    Hey Tom,
How about meeting in St. Joe on Saturday afternoon instead of South Haven since we'll be shooting @ sunset in St. Joe. It would save us time and a trip. Just a thought.

    December 16, 2013

    • Thomas N.

im open to anything. they are only 30 minutes apart.

      December 16, 2013

  • Thomas N.

So we will be meeting in South Haven around 2pm at The Chocolate Cafe downtown South Haven. From there we will have a meet and greet go over gear and head out to shoot.
Depending on weather we can shoot in South Haven or head down to St. Joseph to shoot.I'll let the group decide.
The game plan is to capture the sunset in St. Joseph Saturday and sunrise in South Haven Sunday.
Also The Big Red lighthouse in Holland (30 min north) is another option to consider, maybe Sunday eve?
As far as hotels there are a few options in South Haven.
The Baymont Inn (Ramada) for $55.00 per night dbl.www.baymontinns.com
    Comfort Inn $78.00 dbl www.comfortsuites.com
    Hampton Inn $108.00 dbl www.hilton.com
i', cheap do ill probably stay at the Baymont.
Its off season so booking a room shouldn't be a problem.
thanx and feel free to contact me with any questions.

    December 16, 2013

  • Thomas N.

maybe catch the sunday sunset there?

    December 12, 2013

  • Thomas N.

hey there is another light house we could check out in Holland the Big Red lighthouse is only 30 min. north from south haven.

    December 12, 2013

  • Thomas N.

The workshop says until 2pm Sunday.I'll probably stay for sunset weather permitting.

    December 9, 2013

  • Thomas N.

The fee of $145.00 is for a full day of one on one and group instruction by myself and Joel.
Combined we have over 50 years of photography experience.
