Native American flute and drum workshop

  • May 24, 2014 · 5:00 PM
  • Sunset district of San Francisco

Learn to play the Native American Flute and Drums from around the world in one session with Phoenix Rising (aka Monica Williams, flutist; Wendy Loomis, composer/pianist/ percussionist). Native American flutes and hand percussion instruments are two of the oldest types of human instruments. The flutes have a beautiful tone; they are end-blown (meaning the sound is very easy to produce). Because they are structured around a pentatonic scale, every note combination sounds good. In this workshop we will explore many aspects of the flute and drums including how to improvise and play traditional Native American melodies and simple rhythms in 4/4 patterns. No previous musical experience is necessary.

Flutes and drums will be provided for use at the May 24th event.  You may purchase Native American flutes and/or drums to take home with you at the workshop.

Saturday,  May 24th -  5:00-6:30pm
Cost: FREE  (Donations appreciated)
Location: Sunset District of San Francisco.  RSVP for exact location.

I RSVPed for the event but unfortunately I don't think I can make it to this one. I'm stargazing at Borrego Springs in Southern California and I'm not sure if I can make it there on time for the event. Please let me know when the next meeting is going to be since I recently got my flute and I'm definitely interested.

Sure wish I could go! But, I'm home from having knee surgery and it all went very well. Now the hard work comes: physical therapy! : )
