An Introduction to Birding and Birdsong

This outing is rated as [Easy]

Come join us for an introduction to birding and bird song. Viaduct Flats has a wonderful variety of habitat including a large pond, mature forest, meadows, and shrubs. The walk will be over easy terrain but may have wet and muddy sections.  Although most of the spring migrants have not yet arrived, we will listen and look for the resident birds and hone our birding skills. I will provide an introduction to identifying birds by their songs and calls.

The duration of the  will be approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. To find Viaduct Flats travel north on Interurban Road, past Camosun College's Interurban Campus to the corner of Viaduct Ave. West, the parking lot for the park is on the right. From West Saanich Road, you can drive south on Interurban Road to the same location.

Despite the clouds, we had an enjoyable outing with enjoyable company. At the viewing platform we had a talk about bird vocalizations, how they are produced and the function of different calls. At that location, we saw or heard Red-winged Blackbirds, American Robins, a Marsh Wren, Song Sparrows, Rufus Hummingbirds, a Common Raven, a Turkey Vulture, and a Bald Eagle.

We then followed the trail through a second-growth forest, across a meadow and to a viewing area near the pond. Along the way we saw a Bewick's Wren, heard a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a Spotted Towhee, a Pacific Wren, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, an Anna's Hummingbird, a Purple Finch, a House Finch, a Golden-crowned Sparrow, Violet-green Swallows, and a Barn Swallow. We also noticed that the Easter Lilies, and Trilliums were starting to bloom. It was a great outing with friendly and enthusiastic people.

just a question about the membership fee... this'll be my first time attending and am happy to pay the fee for myself! but my +1 is not intending to become a member and just intends to tag along this time - does he need to pay the full $15? just wondering what your +1 policy is! looking forward to this event. thanks! :)
