Fall Nature Walk

Come join us as we explore nature at the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. We have had an awesome time in the past and are excited to return and explore. We usually walk one or two easy trails. Depending on how we are doing on time, some people like to stop at some of the overlooks also. We are hoping for some beautiful fall foliage and also to possibly catch part of the geese migration. We would love for you to come and join us! We will be meeting at noon at the visitor's center located at 1101 Casey Rd. Basom, NY 14013. Please bring a picnic lunch for you and for your guests. There are usually picnic tables set off to the side at the visitor's center that we eat at. Don't miss out on a great day, you never know what wildlife you may see!!!
***THIS EVENT WILL BE CANCELLED IF IT RAINS AND WE WILL NOTIFY VIA MEETUP

Thanks to all those who came out for the Fall Nature Walk. We had an amazing day considering it looked like it was going to be rained out. Here is the list of what we saw:
    1) American Bald Eagle - 1 Adult
    2) Sand Hill Cranes - 4 Adults, 1 immature
    3) Northern Harrier - 4 immature / female
    4) Peregrine Falcon - 1 immature
    5) Blue Winged Teal - 1 female
    6) Pied Bill Grebe - 3
    7) Mallard Ducks
    8) Canadian Geese
    9) Turkey Vultures
    10) Great Egret
    11) Great Blue Herons

And the big show besides the Sand Hill Cranes, 10 Immature Bald Eagles all in one area. Unfortunately for the group there was only 3 of us left. Awesome day!!

Hello I am so regretful I was unable to attend, and also I appologize for not informing you of the GCC outdoor club not attending. Circumstances came about that made them unable to attend and I was not informed until I ran into the instructor after the event! Glad you all had a great day!

Not a problem. The weather was iffy and we knew not everyone would end up coming. Hope to see you at a future event. :)

Almost a perfect outing; weather was the only iffy note.

Hi Steven, appreciated your sharp eye and knowledge of the various species of birds! Also hi Jennifer, i'm glad i went too. I'd venture to say we all enjoyed the walk. Sun or rain, summer or winter...natures heart always has something to offer. Blessings everyone, Charlie.

Sorry I didn't make it. I thought that it might not be great weather for the drive...and my shopping went long this morning. Glad to hear that a few had a good walk. Maybe another time.

Almost backed out because it looked like rain, but it turned out to be a beautiful fall walk even without the sun.

I'm gambling -- I'm on my way there...should be there in about 45 minutes if the map is correct. See you soon!

I have no rain clothes, not going to make it out today.

The sky is looking too dark in my area to drive the distance only to find thunder showers,etc......Dislike walking in the rain even in rain gear......

Well, I'm going to assume Jodi and Charlie are still going anyway, so I'm getting ready...unless I wimp out the last second, I plan on going :)

We have spent the morning watching forecasts and watching radar. We have to make a decision and go one way or the other, so we are going to attempt to go! :) Hopefully we won't get any heavy rain. We will see everyone who wants to join us there. Like Charlie said, you might want to dress for all possibilities. We are hoping the picnic tables are still set up because this is the latest we have gone in the year, and I did not have a chance to run out there this week and check. I couldn't call the office because they just opened back up. So, we will have a sign (unless it's raining) on our truck in the main parking lot. We will all be heading over to the picnic tables (hopefully) :) for lunch around noon. See you there!!

Just checked accuweathe at 6:00 a.m. 40% chance of rain. Thats not too bad. Suggestion; bring a lightweight rain parka or poncho. I have fished out there, but never walked the trails. So lets, "walk the talk...and talk the walk". ~Charlie

Yep, we will try to make a decision fairly early in the morning and post it here. Just look for a message from either Steve or I. A lot of the people had to work or couldn't make it today, but I agree, would have been a pretty nice day for it. :)

So if we wake up and it's raining it's a no go. Too bad we couldn't have done it today.

Will anyone else be coming from Orchard Park? I would like to car pool.

    October 18, 2013

We take a pretty easy trail to start out. I'd probably set aside an hour for the first trail. It all depends on how quickly you want to move along. Everyone goes at their own pace. If you like to stop and look around a lot or take pictures, probably plan an hour. If you just want to take a quick walk through then it would be quite a bit less. In past years anyone who still wants to stay after that, we either take another easy trail or we stop at one of the overlooks. This event will be canceled if it rains, and right now it isn't looking good. While we are still hoping for the best, the weather does not look like it is going to cooperate. So we will see! :)

Hi everyone, the countdown begins to Saturday. We are hoping and praying for good weather and lots of wildlife. Right now it looks like a cool day with a chance of showers. We still have 5 days for that to change ... which in WNY it most likely will. Look forward to seeing everyone again from our last outing and meeting those of you who are new to the group!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
