~* CRAB TREE NATURE CENTER! *~

"CRAB TREE NATURE CENTER" is a cool little place, it has a very special charm! It's a wonderful little nook in the Northwest Cook County Forest Preserves.

MEETING PLACE AND TIME: The Nature Center opens at 8am, We can park in their lot and gather together in front of the Nature Center Building at 7:45am and go in at 8:00am. It is pretty easy to find.

THE PLAN: We'll go for a morning walk around their pond and through the woods to the lake or there's a trail through the Savannah for those desiring a longer walk in a more open area. We'll hit it when the sun begins it's morning glow... Perfect!!!

DISCRIPTION OF THE AREA: They have Lakes and Water Fowl as well as other Migrating Birds, in the Wetlands, Woods, and Savannah, It's a really neat place... It's glacier formed landscape has more than a thousand acres set aside for educational purposes.

BIRDS: They also give housing and feed a few rescued Raptors (unable to fly), on the west side of the Nature Center, outside... They do feed them mice and other goodies! It is very interesting to watch if you are there during a feed. We can try and find out when they plan to feed them, perhaps we'll get lucky!

Crabtree is very popular for birding. A total of 263 bird species have been recorded to breed on the property. We should be able to see Blue Heron and White Egrets in both the pond and the lake, and they are also seen in the wetlands. Numerous ducks and geese varieties occur in spring and fall on Crabtree Lake.

WILDLIFE: There is plenty of wildlife to observe as well as turtles at this time of year laying their eggs, and plenty of frogs, and other little creatures for our Macro delights!

Early Spring wildflowers carpet the forested areas, and in the Summer months, the prairie area is in bloom.

They also have an exhibit building with some interesting goodies and the self-guiding, educational trails enable you to enjoy the wildlife and native plants and to learn of the vital relationships in nature which allow all of us to survive on this earth God's special gift to us!

I can hear the frogs calling us now!!! love struckCome and join us!!!

*** IMPORTANT: Please Note the Rain Date: Is "Sunday 7/1", you will be notified if the weather looks bad for that area and if we need to reschedule. If this Meetup ends up on Sunday we would meet at2:45pm and go in at 3:00pm.*** Please check our site for any changes if you are questioning the weather! Thank You!!!

Hi Laurie, I'm excited that this is your first meetup with us, i hope you have a lot of fun! I think the gear i like to use the most is my macro lens... for closeups, Nikon 105mm 2.8, I also like to use a telephoto lens to zoom in on animals and birds. Nikon[masked]mm 2.8, And then for Landscapes i like to use my Wide Angle, it's a Nikon 17- 35mm 2.8. I don't know what lens you have at this time. But i'm sure you can find shots at this place for any lens you are able to bring. Hope this helps!
