  • DEVILS LAKE STATE PARK "SOUTH" ENTRANCE

HEY, NPM NATURE PHOTOGRAPHERS!!!  LET'S GO TO DEVILS LAKE STATE PARK FOR LATE AFTERNOON LIGHTING AND SUNSET OVER THE LAKE!!!

Devil’s Lake State Park in central Wisconsin is often called the Midwest’s “Yellowstone” and it’s easy to see why!!! Wisconsin’s most popular state park features amazing vistas from atop rugged, 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a pristine 360-acre lake... Devil’s Lake also encompasses a unique section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and offers over 29 miles of scenic trail surrounded many more miles of secluded Wisconsin back country.

Devils Lake State Park is just south of Baraboo, Wisconsin and Interstate 90-94. If you have a GPS you might want to type the address in and follow directions to get to the general area of the park.  Then you will need to follow our directions below to get to the "SOUTH ENTRANCE" which is the area we are meeting at:

Devils Lake State Park
S5975 Park Road
Baraboo, WI 53913
[masked]

IMPORTANT!!! Devils Lake State Park has 2 entrances and we are meeting at the "SOUTH" ENTRANCE, not the North Entrance (shown in above address). WE WILL MEET AT THE SOUTH ENTRANCE "VISITORS CENTER"! SEE MAP LINK! http://www.devilslakeclimbingguides.com/visiting-devils-lake.html

MANY TRAILS TO EXPLORE!!!

We will start out as a group exploring 2 popular trails...

Devil’s Doorway — This is an easy, level asphalt trail along the edge of the top of the East Bluff to views of Devil’s Lake with drop-offs along the way. There is a notable side trail with stone steps to the Devil’s Doorway rock formation. (.5 mile, approximate hiking time .25 hour) Access to this trail is from East Bluff, East Bluff Woods, CCC, Potholes and/or Balanced Rock trails.

East Bluff – A medium effort trail that is asphalt with stone steps as it winds back and forth between the edge of the bluff and the adjacent woods. Goes to the top of the East Bluff for many scenic views and drop-offs. Elephant Cave and Elephant Rock are at the north end.

We could check out other trails as time permits!!!  This is a huge natural area and we can return in the future to explore many other awesome trails if our group enjoys this spot!

COST FOR DAILY PASSES:
Vehicle with WI license plates $7
Vehicle with out-of-state plate $10

DIRECTIONS TO MEETING SPOT!!!

From Rockford/Chicago: Follow I-39 North/I-90 West to the outskirts of Madison, WI. Near Madison, turn left onto US-12 West. Stay on US-12 through Madison, Middleton, and Sauk City, driving approximately 45 miles to the Baraboo Hills. After you drive up the steep, forested hill near Baraboo, turn right on Ski-Hi Road to reach the "South Entrance"!

VERY SORRY I was unable to be at the meeting spot on time to meet the group, i did call and arrange for our assist organizer to be there and meet the group at the correct spot. I spend hours of research checking directions to the meeting spots. I go thru extensive explainations with maps to each meeting place! This meetup had those exact details. The map link showed exactly where the south visitor center was and there were exact , directtions in meetup description too. It is up to those attending to make sure they read and understand the details. You're also given my d email that you can use to contact me well in advance of a Meetup. We had a family situation that caused us to be late. George Our assistant organizer was happy to fill in for me. And i thank him for that. please be sure to read and understand the complete meetup instructions before the event and call me or email in advance of each meetup. That is your responsibility as a member. Thank you for understanding!

My apologies for missing the meetup. I completely blanked and thought it was the north visitor center (i was running a bit late and my campsite was over in northern lights). And by time i finally was able to back check that it was indeed the south, I was already up on the east side bluff (started climbing at 2:45 after waiting around and starting to wonder if i was mistaken). My cell phone was sporadic at best this weekend as AT&T coverage was garbage up there. (i got the message about meeting at the sign when I was near balanced rock). Again, my apologies! :(

I have been to 39 meetups since Nov. 2011. If anybody thinks setting up these meetups it's not. Most meetups people say there going and do not show. People are late go to the wrong meeting place it's life. I think we have a good group of people. People that take the time to help people that need it. There is always somebody to help guide the group in the begining. Greg did a fine job of helping out. I did not know the area and the trails on how they were on some members.

John it did contact Sandi at 2:15 pm. I went back to the visitor center were Magen & I waited until 3:00 pm. We asked everybody we saw that had a camera if they were part of the group. Then we went to the bottom of the trail were we saw 3 people at the bottom. We then went up the trail and down. We did see Greg and his wife at the end of the day. The important thing you did get to shoot and a have a good time.

Tomorrow is supposed to be perfect. I'll probably be able to be available with the group until about 6pm or so before having to be back with my family. I'm well versed on the east bluff as I climb that every year (some years I do both sides in one swoop). Looking forward to meetin y'all! :)

      August 9, 2012

  • Raymond T.

I'm going to be up there anyways as my family is camping up there this week (I join them on Friday). I'm not sure how late I can stay as that is dependent on the group I will be staying with.
