First and foremost, Persona non grata is the story of Franz Wuytack. An activist, a sculptor and a missionary, the multidimensional and inspirational Belgian is the ideal subject for a documentary—all the more so because his personal life is the expression of a particular moment in Latin American history. During the 1960s Wuytack was one of the stalwarts of Venezuela’s radical left movement. Whether helping to build houses for the homeless or publicly protesting the lack of clean water for the poor, he was an energetic, outspoken participant in the sociocultural revolution of Latin America. Persecuted by the government and banned by the church, Wuytack was exiled from Venezuela (twice) before being welcomed back as a hero 30 years later when he attended an art exhibition held in his honour. Wuytack’s son Fabio explores and retraces the path of his celebrated father, documenting his life-long commitment to the struggle for social justice. A record of both one man’s solo journey through life and universal human history, Persona non grata is a moving and loving tribute to a father from his son.

Persona non grata, c’est d’abord l’histoire de Franz Wuytack. Activiste, sculpteur et missionnaire, ce Belge d’origine aux vies multiples est le type de personnalité hors-norme et inspirante qui semble être fait pour le documentaire, d’autant plus que le parcours de Franz permet en fait de mettre à jour tout un pan de l’histoire de l’Amérique Latine. Il fut en effet l’un des piliers de la gauche radicale dans le Venezuela des années 60. Bâtissant des maisons pour les pauvres, protestant publiquement contre le manque d’eau potable pour les déshérités, le missionnaire Wuytack a participé activement à l’avènement d’une conscientisation socioculturelle en Amérique Latine. Persécuté par le gouvernement et indésirable pour l’Église, il a été banni deux fois du Venezuela. 30 ans plus tard, à l’occasion d’une exposition organisée en son honneur, cet artiste toujours aussi engagé est accueilli en héros par le pays qu’il a tant aidé à mettre au monde. Et ces retrouvailles sont filmées par nul autre que son fils, Fabio. Ce dernier observe, interroge et reconstruit le parcours de ce père illustre qui demeure un modèle de lutte contre l’injustice sociale.
