Let's Jam!

This group is for people who like to play instruments and or sing for fun. All skill levels welcome. I am generally thinking of this as neighborhood group for the Berkeley/Oakland area. I live at Telegraph and Alcatraz and I will host the first 2 jams just to get things started, then if anyone else in the area would like to host that would be great.

The songs will come from 3 sources:

1. Rise Up Singing. This is a classic sing along book with 1200 pop and folk tunes – lyrics and chords. I have 5 copies, if you have a copy bring it along.

2. Digital tablets and laptops. The good thing about this is pretty much any song and chords can be found on the internet. The challenge is that we probably need at least 6 computers/tablets for everyone to be able to see. This method will be somewhat experimental. I have one Ipad and WIFI access.

3. Xerox sheets. This is actually one of the best and easiest ways for everyone to play. If you have a song you want to play be sure to bring at least 10 copies so every one can see.

The Format: We go around the circle and each person either chooses a song or passes. This way the songs will be decided by whoever is there that evening. Music will wrap up around 10pm.

Instruments: Pretty much any aucoustic* instruments are welcome. Just singing with no instrument is great too. *I live in an apartment building so we can't get too loud.

Other things: I don’t have any music stands and am just planning to use the table as you see in the picture. If you have table or standing music stands, that might be helpful, and necessary if you stand to play.

    Hi,
I can get there and back with Paratransit, but it's much better for me if I can get a ride. I'm on Fruitvale in Oakland, several blocks from the 580 Fruitvale Exit and MacArthur Blvd.

I can chip in for gas, and/or cover you for refreshments. I need help getting my guitar and bag up and down the stairs. I'm sure someone there would be willing to help, if necessary.

I've been to this meetup group before, and have been a very active member of the Rise Up Singing (since 1/11) and Closet Musicians (3/12) meetup groups

    Cheers!

I can't help with the ride but I or the first arrivers can definitely help with carrying your guitar. Also, Just for everyones information, the south end of my building where you enter has stairs, but the north end has a ramp. If you go through the door just to the left of the stairs and walk down that hall, you will come to a ramp that goes right up to my door.

Hey Peter, I'll be driving today so I can give you a ride if you still need. Also, since this is my first one of these I'm a little lost as to getting there. I think google maps shows the address as a multi-unit place. Where exactly are we meeting?

Hi, just a reminder to all, if you RSVP to come and then aren't able to make it, be sure to change your RSVP to "not coming" so the next person in line can come -Thanks!
