Dorkbot-Boston June meeting: Lilypad, Creative Cad, Interactive Projections

I discovered a group that calls itself "Dorkbot-Boston" posted to the BostonScienceAndEngineeringLectures.Com science lecture calendar. Anybody want to check it out with me? We can meet outside, and head in at, say, 6:15 pm?

Dorkbot 20090630:
http://dorkbotboston....

"dorkbot-boston is a monthly gathering of people doing strange things with electricity. Artists, designers, engineers, students, scientists, hackers and anyone else interested in the creative use of electricity are encouraged to attend. dorkbot meetings are free, family-freindly and open to the public.

"This summer, dorkbot will present: hands-on workshops, outdoor hacking events (Breadboards and BBQ), tours of interactive entertainment venues, and internationally known tinkerers".

Where to meet:

Where to gather? Outside the gallery? Never been there before. We can head in at 6:15 pm to check it out. T.J. Maher is 5 foot 7, with short brown hair spiked in the front, blue eyes, a "Hello My Name is T.J." nametag, a red MEETUP sign attached to his black messenger bag, and a temporary tattoo of an anchor placed there by Amy Hughes on his upper left arm.

Dorkbot Presenters:

"Leah Buechley is an Assistant Professor at the MIT Media Lab where she directs the High-Low Tech research group. The High-Low Tech group explores the integration of high and low technology from cultural, material, and practical perspectives, with the goal of engaging diverse groups of people in developing their own technologies. Leah is a well-known expert in the field of electronic textiles (e-textiles), and her work in this area includes developing a method for creating cloth printed circuit boards (fabric PCBs) and designing the commercially available LilyPad Arduino toolkit. http://hlt.media.mit....

"Gideon Weisz is a jeweler, sculptor, and hacker working in Allston, Somerville and Cambridge. At the 200905 dorkbot, he demonstrated his beautifully mysterious Linked Boxes (http://gideonweisz.co.... He will be sharing some of his work along with tips and techniques for fabrication. http://www.gideonweis...

"Brian Knep is a new-media artist who uses science and technology to explore change, healing, struggle, and acceptance. Often his works are dynamic and respond to changes in their environment. Some are simply aware of the passage of time while others are interactive, sensing and reacting to the people around them". http://www.blep.com/...

About Dorkbot, Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.o...

"Dorkbot is a group of affiliated organizations worldwide that sponsor grassroots meetings of artists, engineers, designers, scientists, inventors, and anyone else working under the very broad umbrella of electronic art. The dorkbot motto is "people doing strange things with electricity".

"Started by Douglas Repetto at the Columbia University Computer Music Center in 2000, dorkbot has spread around the world, with over sixty chapters either planning or actively holding meetings as of 2007.

"The purpose of dorkbot meetings is to nurture a local electronic arts community and to encourage emerging, and established, artists to present new works for informal peer review. While many of the dorkbot groups hold their meetings at universities and students are encouraged to attend, dorkbot meetings are not restricted in any way to the academic community".

Amy, where do I find these events? Usually, I just search Boston.Com for keywords "History", "Computer", and "Science", the brute force method. This one, I found through Fred Hapgood's "Boston Science and Engineering Lectures" at http://fhapgood.fastmail.fm/site02.html ... there was link on the site that I investigated.

From someone who once almost electrocuted himself when he was 4 (twice!), this seems really cool!

I asked if it was okay if we crashed the event, and David Nunez wrote: "AWESOME! Of course you all can come! you'd be more than welcome. Please be sure to introduce yourself to me :) Check out our calendar, too: http://www.dorkbotboston.com/upcoming-events you'd be more than welcome to post upcoming nerdfun events on that calendar as well".

Hi, David Nunez! Welcome to "Nerd Fun"! I didn't come up with the name. I can't take credit for it. ;) Heck, it's what attracted me to the group a year ago!

FYI...For those taking public transportation, you can also get to Green Street by taking the #39 bus from Back Bay Station and walking down a few blocks to the Green Street Station...or take the #66 bus from Harvard Square to the intersection of Huntington and South Huntington and then catch the #39 bus there...or take the #1 bus to the Mass. Ave. T station on the Orange Line.

Just a heads up. Online, this event shows as starting at 7pm rather than 6:30

FYI if you all are looking for food afterwards- one stop down (or a perfectly acceptable walk) there is the Brewery Complex, which features Ula Cafe (likely to be closed at that hour) and The Milky Way. There are also a ton of excellent places to eat up on Centre Street. For a large group, I'd recommend Wonder Spice, as they have a number of tables that can take large groups. Or, head into Forest Hills and right opposite the station is Dogwood, which has amazingly yummy brick-oven pizzas.

i <3 Gideons work. It was so crowded there, I was in the back. It was great to hear people's reactions to his work. Glad everyone came out.

So disappointed I missed it. Had a work event and it went too late for me to make it there.

That was simply amazing. I loved seeing the first lecturer talk about how he welded a hypercube, and his linked cubes in metal. The magic boxes where the one hanging from the ceiling mimicked the one you twirled and twisted around was hysterical! And I love the third speaker, demonstrating not only how she made wearable computers, but how she had designed a hobby-kit where anyone could create wearable computers. I got there at 5:30 pm. We sat down in the front row at 6:30 pm, wondering if anyone else would show. By 6:50 the 40 seat room was half full. By 6:51 pm, forty more people must have showed up. They were standing 10 people deep in the back, sitting on the floor in the front... yeah, sitting down a half hour ahead of time was a good plan.

It was a bunch of fun, almost whimsical presentations on various gadgets and projects. Have multiple speakers really kept things dynamic, and the breadth of different projects was impressive. The venue was overflowing, and that's not a great thing, but if you had a seat it was quite enjoyable.

It is unlikely that you'll find a greater density of Nerds than was seen at the DorkBot@Axiom. Great fun.
