"WHAT IS THAT?" Your tour guides know stuff but you intellectuals should be able to fill in the details!! Bring your cameras BECAUSE you'll want to have the zoom option to see certain things!
There is no "cap" on this meetup because people can branch off & join /enter the tour later, & because we can do this as 2 tours (you have 2 hosts). But one of the tours WILL respect the designated itinerary times!
Lets do a brief FREE tour of Harvard Square for Nerd Fun only! Your "guides" are long time residents and very seasoned excelling Meetup organizers.
What you'll "learn" on this tour is what most tours won't tell you: contemporary venues info, and what you can only learn from Nerds. Because this is a participatory tour, & other Nerds will be saying things we want to know. Because we Nerds are curious & know things.
Itinerary -- TIMES ARE APPROXIMATE--
After Cafe Pamplona-- a longstanding venue (60 plus years) in Harvard Sq.,
4:00 PM: We'll check the different floors of Hong Kong on Mass Ave. (we're not going to stay here).
Shortly thereafter is Bartley's,
The Harvard Book Store, (2 floors); Harvard Sq. used to have 25 book stores now there are four!
--Leavitt & Pierce, Tabacconists
--Notice (as we pass) Yenching, 1326 Mass Ave, once home to the hippest Intellectual Snob venue any where around, once called Hayes Bickford ("The Bick").
Briefly across the way from there we duck into the courtyard of Harvard, to
4:35 PM: Cafe Gato Rojo of Lehman Hall (Harvard Yard).
--Club Passim, once called Club 47,
--Cafe Algiers, also a very longstanding Harvard Square area venue (3 floors).
5:30 PM: Grendel's Den, a Meetup sensation. This will be a major stop because they STILL have half price off their menu, w/ the purchase of a $3.50 drink. Don't be later than 5:30, you won't find seats.
--Tasty Burger, a new 2-floor trendy student curiosity (we aren't going to stay here).
6:30 PM: John Harvard's brewery, also a big contemporary Meetup venue. It's now the Nerd Fun Intellectual Snob main venue so let's stop here for a half hour. John Harvard's offers beer tasting samplers. Notice the stained glass windows of Richard Nixon, LBJ, Joe Namath, & Bobby Orr.
7:00 PM: Directly across from there on Dunster St., look WAY up & you'll see WINDMILLS on the roof top. What is this, strait out of Don Quixote (Don Quijote de la Mancha)? We'll go inside the Holyoke Center where -chance has it -there is the biggest Foosball play board ever before seen or even contemplated. We'll see if we can figure out how to play a game on it. I think we can. Minimum 10 players (not 2!)
The Harvard Community Garden (Mt. Auburn St.) in front of:
--The strangest & most Dadaist building in Cambridge surpassing even MIT for architectural strangeness. Built in 1909.
Across from there on the corner of Linden st. you'll see some very interesting roof gutter statuary-- truly-- (look up!) copper gutters carved into griffins.
7:45 PM: Daedalus, a great 3- floor restaurant w/ a patio. THIS USED TO BE THE ORIGINAL JAZZ "CLUB 47" opened in 1948 where Joan Baez was first performing ten years later:
This is right next to The Democracy Center 45 Mt. Auburn St. which we'll briefly peek into first.
All the way along you'll be encouraged to say what you know, just make it pertinent to this tour and no promotions encouraged. Thanks!
