FINAL DATE: Be pledge operators for WBGH

Hi, WGBH fans,

Given a choice of two dates with the last update, more people can come on June 29 than June 30, so I told the volunteer coordinator today that we'd be there Saturday, June 29. The hours are 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

They already had some other people signed up, so they ONLY NEED 19 of us. It looks like we have more than that now, but some folks who preferred June 30 may still be on the list. PLEASE update your RSVP appropriately now that the date is settled. They want to know by this Friday, June 7, if we'll fill all 19 available slots.

Thanks for your patience as we get this worked out!

Sylvia

Free dinner and good times.
Our local PBS station, WGBH, with HQ in Brighton, needs volunteers to answer the phones and take pledges. From their email:

"Pledge Operators answer phones and record pledges of support from donors
as part of WGBH’s fundraising drives. Qualifications include excellent
customer services skills and friendly disposition; strong command of the
English language; ability to speak loudly and clearly over the
telephone; capacity to hear callers over the phone with ease; and experience using a laptop computer with basic data entry skills. A pledge shift includes dinner and training. We could also get Nerd Fun mentioned on the air and wave to the cameras!

So come on out and help get funding for Downton Abbey.

Hi Sylvia, thanks for organizing. How many people ended up going? Did WGBH have any other people to fill in? Thanks again, I know it's harder to pull an event together for a volunteer event for some reason. I hope you had fun.

    • Sylvia

Hi, Heather, we wound up being just 12, and there were about 18 in all because some came from other places. One Nerd Fun member was there who didn't come as part of our group. : ) But they didn't seem upset about that and it was a quite positive experience.

      that's great. ... thanks again.

  • Sylvia

Thanks for coming, folks! I hope you all had a good time. I think the GBH staff were quite nice to us, and even with the occasional frustration with the pledge software, I'd do it again.

I'm sorry to miss this, but I've got a family obligation.

So sorry to have to back out!!

That's OK. We'll wave to you thru the cameras.

    I won't be finished with work until 6 or 6:30. ):

    June 28, 2013

    • Sylvia

Hi, I'll ask them what to do. You'll miss the training period, so that may be a problem. OTOH maybe you could catch up. Unless you get a further message, plan on coming when you can.

Hello Everyone , Are there any other people who are coming via public transportation ?

I am looking for the MOST convinient way to get to WBGH from Central Square .

    Thank you in advance !

I'll do it by T, too, but haven't yet plotted the route. Their TripFinder usually offers decent suggestions, but not always the most efficient.

The number 86 bus from Harvard Square goes right past the WGBH building, after the turn from Western Ave. onto Market St. The only question is how often it runs on Saturdays.

  • Jim

Sylvia, would you please confirm me for Saturday 6-29 from 5 to 11pm? Today is June 24 I could possibly do the 30th but would need to know by tomorrow 6-25 so I can make other plans.

    June 24, 2013

    • Sylvia

      Jim, it's definitely the 29th, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

      June 24, 2013

    • Jim

Thanks so much Sylvia, I'll be there.

      June 25, 2013

  • Sylvia

It was only today that I learned about the 19 spaces rather than 30; I apologize if anyone's disappointed. Apparently when she told me 30 people it was 30 total, and she didn't say some of the spots were full already!

    June 4, 2013

    • Heather

I hope people are good RSVPers, last time I ran a WGBH pledge event half the people that said "yes" were no-shows. Maybe this time everyone that says yes can post a "yes I'm definitely showing" comment as confirmation a day or two beforehand so we have 19 people for sure.

YES I can do the 29th.

    Hopefully details will follow...

Never mind! I can't come at all on the 29th. I can come on the 30th.

The 29th is great, the 30th, not so much, but I can make it happen.

    May 29, 2013

  • Cheryl

At this point, both dates are open for me, but I will need to know somewhat soon which one will actually be scheduled.

    May 29, 2013

  • Jim

Since my time is worth more than money I look forward to the opportunity of giving back to WGBH for their programing excellence.

    May 28, 2013

  • Heather

AND... no need to announce "Nerd Fun" on air, we don't need publicity. :) (seriously... I don't need a thousand new members overnight. WE are volunteers running this group). Say "meetup" if you have to say something. Thanks again!

    May 24, 2013

    • Sylvia

I won't ask them to say anything about us . . . it was just that sometimes you hear the host say, e.g., "and we have folks from XYZ Corp. answering the phones" or whatever. I only mentioned it as an inducement for thos wishing for momentary fame as the wave to the camera sweeping the phone banks. : )

      May 25, 2013

    • Heather

When we did it before they were all ready to market Nerd Fun for me with subtitles and announcements. I asked them to just use "meetup"

      May 26, 2013

  • Kyle K.

Scheduling difficulties, I won't be able to make it

    May 26, 2013

  • judy

    sorry, busy week.......
    when is the next time?

    May 25, 2013

    • Sylvia

I don't know. The station has a few times during the year when it raises funds or holds an auction, and seeks volunteers at those times. The station contacted Nerd Fun, that's how I knew about this time.

Should we arrive earlier than 7:00 pm for training or is training on another day? I tried to download the "ticket" but could only find a page that contained agenda info and directions. Is some sort of printed confirmation needed to get into the building that night? Thanks for getting back to me when you can.

    May 25, 2013

    • Sylvia

Training is the same night. It's brief The time is yet to be confirmed by GBH. I'm sure they'll specify an arrival time that allows for the training period. Downloading a ticket's not needed; that applies to some events, not all.

    I'm in!

  • Dusya L.

I would like more information about what I would do at this event and what I should bring or why I should bring my laptop ?

    May 24, 2013

    • Sylvia

I have a call in to get more details. Pretty sure they provide the laptops, as I'm sure it's their database we'll be using. It's sitting at some tables with other volunteers and answering the phone assigned to you if someone calls to make a pledge to the station. Then you record the pledge. The WGBH people are very nice to the volunteers!

      May 25, 2013

  • Orianne

I'd love to help, but I'd probably be a couple of minutes late since I'm not off work until 6:30. Do you think that would be ok? I'll wait to RSVP until I hear from you! :D

    May 24, 2013

  • Heather

ALSO... be good RSVPers! you're volunteering for one of the coolest places in town. Give Nerd Fun a good name. ;-)

    May 24, 2013

  • Heather

thanks for running this, Sylvia. NerdFun did this before, it was fun. We didn't get a Mel Brooks show tho. You go early, get a lecture on what to do, then you sit at the computers and take calls on air.

A group of coworkers and I used to do a couple of closing-time 4 hour shifts for the "quickie board" at their annual auctions back in the early/mid 2000s (at their old Western Ave location), was always lots of fun.
