The Fifth Anniversary of Nerd Fun Picnic @ The Boston Common

Where to Meet:

Meet up outside the Boston Common Visitor's Center between 1:00 pm and 1:15 pm. At 1:15 pm, once we get a sizable group, we can head out for a place on the Boston Common we can all spread out out blankets together.

T.J. Maher is 5 foot 7, with short brown hair, blue eyes, and a "Hello My Name is T.J." nametag and a red MEETUP sign attached to his black messenger bag. T.J. will be handing out "MEETUP" stickers to people so others can find us.

Things to Bring:

  • Blankets
  • Chairs
  • Outdoor games (e.g. frisbee,  bocce ball)
  • Board games (although, ones with many tiny pieces may not be a good choice)
  • Food
  • Cold Drinks (no alcoholic beverages, please).
  • Picnic Supplies: Blanket, cooler (if you want).

How to RSVP:

Just to get a loose headcount, please comment if you are pretty sure you will be attending.

About T.J. Maher:

T.J. was once a very active Assistant Event Coordinator for Nerd Fun from June 2008 to December 2010, attending his 321 Nerd Fun event on 3/21/2011. For the past year he has switched from planning events for Nerd Fun to attend to planning his wedding, which was held on May 2012.

About the Boston Common:

http://www.cityofboston.gov/freedomtrail/bostoncommon.asp

"The starting point of the Freedom Trail, Boston Common is the oldest park in the country. The park is almost 50 acres in size.

"Today, Boston Common is the anchor for the Emerald Necklace, a system of connected parks that winds through many of Boston's neighborhoods.

"The 'Common' has been used for many different purposes throughout its long history. Until 1830, cattle grazed the Common, and until 1817, public hangings took place here. British troops camped on Boston Common prior to the Revolution and left from here to face colonial resistance at Lexington and Concord in April, 1775".

The Boston Common is open to the public, and does allow large groups to picnic on the grounds.

It was so good to see everyone! I was so glad to see members both old and new, relaxing and talking and chatting. I was also quite glad for old members I haven't seen in a while to meet my wife. :)

Excellent event; I had a blast! I met a lot of people who were into cool things. Some of my favorite stories included: an iguana tooth, international travel adventures/mishaps, improv, Loki, juggling, bocce history, political theatre,Stompy, and nerdy companionship. Great meetup!

woOt! let's do this thing. 1. you can shut off notifications (^ top right here) if you don't want email like the one you may have gotten from reading this post. 2. this sounds like a nice chill hobnobbing event, blanket, snacks to share, board games, frisbee (I'll have knitting). 3. Thanks to TJ and Duncan for committing to setting this up.

No invasion gear needed, Bill! I wrote to the people who manage the Boston Common, and asked if 40 or 50 people could come and have a picnic, maybe throw frisbee. They thanked me for checking with them and said the park is open to the public. No paperwork needed to be filled out.

Will we be required to wear the "appropriate" Viking invading attire?

I don't have a rain date planned at the moment. If it rains we can... invade the City Place Food Court accross the street from the Boylston T stop on the green line?

thanks for posting, Duncan. Even if it's just a BYO picnic somewhere it'd be a fun occasion to recognize. ... btw, here's video of the very first Nerd Fun event, a Michael Palin book reading in Hvd Sq https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...
