NEC Fall Concert Series: Litton + Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, & Kabalevsky

It's time for the next FREE classical music concert for the fall season at the New England Conservatory of Music!

Tonight, guest conductor Andrew Litton leads the NEC Philharmonia in an all-Russian program, including the beloved Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2, and Prokofiev's 4th symphony. (Listen to excepts below; the names in the list link to youtube performances of the works.)

For more information about this concert, go to http://necmusic.edu/nec-philharmonia-litton.

BECAUSE THIS CONCERT IS LIKELY TO BE wELL ATTENDED, and our usual spot in the balcony coveted for a piano concerto, let's meet up at no later than 7:15pm, so the group can grab a bunch of seats together when the doors open at 7:30, and then socialize before the concert. We will sit in left-middle section of the balcony, since this affords a good view of the entire orchestra, (particularly good when a pianist is playing), is open to the ceiling, and is easy to describe and find, and it is relatively easy to grab a large block of seats there.

Directions to Jordan Hall:
The hall is located at the corner of Huntington and Gainsborough streets, about a block south of the Symphony T stop on the Green Line. It's also close to the Mass Ave station on the Orange line. Look for the building with the YMCA sign on top of it as you walk down Huntington Ave--it's near that building. The main entrance is reached from Gainsborough Street.

I found the first half of the concert delightful -- the Rach is always a favorite. The Prokofiev felt a little heavy and plodding to me, although I found the opening of the 2nd movement sublime. All in all, a wonderful evening. Thanks to everyone who came for coming out to enjoy the music!
