Geek Craft: Kitty Blankets, aka: Snuggles Project

Let's help the homeless kitties stay warm and cuddled this winter by making some cat blankets!

The blankets can be knit, crochet, sewn, woven or quilted, as long as they're cuddly and made with love. The benefit of the blankets goes beyond comfort for the animal. A blanket can calm a frightened or difficult to handle animal, it gives a more homey environment to the shelter for visitors so they may stay longer with the animals and are more likely to adopt, and the blanket maker receives the feeling of doing something good for someone who really needs it!

Just starting out knitting or crocheting? That's perfect! The kittens will NOT mind if there are mistakes!

You can make them for your local shelter, or we'll be collecting blankets to take to Katie's Place Shelter.

Here are some links to patterns on the SnugglesProject.org website (apart of Hugs for Homeless Animals, there are also links to places that accept "Snuggles" blankets)

Crochet: http://www.snugglesproject.org/pattern-library/crochet/

Knit: http://www.snugglesproject.org/pattern-library/knit/

Sew: http://www.snugglesproject.org/pattern-library/sew/

You don't have to use these patterns! Any pattern, any blanket will do. It's also a GREAT way to bust that yarn stash! (the kittens won't mind if the colours match or not!)

Let's make some homeless kitties happy!

This event is scheduled to start at 2:00pm, however, feel free to come at any time. Please note that the weekly Nerd HQ event Dinner & Death will also be taking place this date.  If you are planning on attending both events, please RSVP to each separately.  You can RSVP here: Dinner & Death

Thanks for another lovely crafternoon, Geek Crafters! These kittens are going to be getting some lovely blankets. There's still time to finish/make blankets before we get them to the shelter...!

Just another thought..we can also make cat TOYS for the shelter kitties! They're quick and fun. Here are a few links for some ideas. (maybe Margaret can show us how to sew little stuffed 'mice' as well!) http://www.squidoo.com/homemadecattoys

How big should the blankets be? 1 metre square? bigger? smaller?

Thanks, Sandra, I'll see how many I can make by then.

Great! I think the plan is to work on them at this event, then we'll have another couple of weeks to finish them before we give them all to the shelter!

This sounds great! Thanks for the links -- the snuggle tubbie looks so cute! And the kitties! I'm going to be crocheting to start, and will probably need some help. But I know I'll be in the right place to get it!

I'm happy to help with crocheting, not that I'm an expert or anything, but, two heads better than one and all that..right?! :)
