Geek Craft: Learn to Knit II: Attack of the Yarns.

It's that time again! Whether you've never held yarn in your life, or you're a beginner looking for some tips and tricks, come on down to La Fontana Caffe and we'll get you started! Pretty soon you too could be giving away adorable little hand-knit daleks, or sporting a stylish new Slytherin scarf.

We'll start with basic instruction on Casting On, and have everyone doing rows of garter stitch by the end of the afternoon. Kate will bring some scrap yarn and a few pairs of spare needles, but if you want to take your project home to continue learning, you'll want to bring your own. Feel free to leave a comment if you'd like advice or suggestions on what/where to buy materials. If you've been meaning to learn how to knit, now's your chance!

Even if you already know how to knit, this event is open to every one, come on out to Nerd HQ headquarters and work on your own project and enjoy the company of your fellow nerds.

If you are planing on sticking around after Geek Craft for Nerd HQ's Dinner & Death (or only dinner) event that's Great! Please RSVP separately in that event. Click HERE for a link to the event. Doing so helps Nerd HQ with the planing of food.  Please note that you do not have to stay for both parts of dinner and death, the dinner portion of the evening is first, and then AFTER dinner, we watch The Walking Dead.  Stay for one or both, its lots of fun!

Sorry it isn't about crochet, but it is really CUTE!!! I had to share it with yawl!

I wish I could make this my first meetup with you guys but we don't actually move into the area until the very beginning of May. Will you be continuing these knitting meetups?

Yes! Not sure when the next one will be, buy there will definitely be more of them. Good luck with your move!

It depends on what you'd like to make! For a starter project you probably want to pick a medium sized yarn that doesn't have any funky loops or frays to it, just smooth and easy to see where your stitches are. Every yarn will have a needle size suggestion on it, so if you find one you like you can pick up matching needles. I find it's best to pick a yarn that you like the colour and feel of - you won't want to knit with it otherwise!

Is there a specific type of needle and yarn we should bring if we have it?

I won't be knitting, I'll be working on my plastic canvas dollhouse project. Perhaps I'll finish by December.

I've never actually tried this, but I've heard that you can learn to knit on chopsticks - the disposable wooden ones apparently just need to be sharpened a bit on the ends.

Oh, you could get really sharp points, new craft project maybe?
