Poker Night for Nerds! (And other games)

  • Feb 23, 2014 · 12:00 PM
  • Steve's House (That's ME!!)

So who else likes Poker, but isn't a big fan of going to the casino and throwing down your life savings, in order to play against a bunch of cutthroat jerks?  I know I fall in that category.  I love the game of Poker, but I have to say, casino Poker is just NOT FUN!  So who else would be interested in having a low-key, cheap, nerdy Poker Night where we enjoy the game, more than the idea of making money?!

My fiance and I just got a 2 bedroom apartment in Kent, and have plenty of space to put up 2-3 tables for Poker and other board games.  We have the space in the dining room, living room, and the second bedroom has double doors and feels very open with the rest of the apartment.  There would be plenty of room to set up a table in there as well.  I will have an RSVP limit, because let's face it, it's an apartment.  But the way it's laid out, it does feel very spacious.

We can figure out a buy-in later, but I was thinking 5-10 bucks.  Some people may wonder, "Why do I have to put down real money, if the money doesn't matter?"  Well, there's a good reason for it.  People play VERY differently when the game is free.  They play foolishly, and not the same way they would play if something was riding on their success.  I think 5 dollars is cheap enough that we can all afford to lose it, and enough that people will still play safe and smart, and not like an idiot.  Nothing is more frustrating than someone who plays like a millionaire, and goes "all in" on every hand.  Anyone who has played Poker before KNOWS who I'm talking about.  ;)  So let's plan for 5 bucks for now.  We may have an option for additional buy-ins later.  And for those who don't want to play with real money, I have 2 smaller, cheaper Poker sets.  We could set up a free game for people that don't feel comfortable, and people who want to learn, without losing anything.  (My fiance may very well be one of those people.)

So feel free to bring other board games, drinks (alcohol is fine, just don't get carried away.  I know I'll be having some drinks! Lol.), food, or whatever else you would like to bring to make it a fun day.  I also have a 52' Sharp LED TV, over 850 DVDs and Blurays, a PS2, and a Super Nintendo if anyone wants to use it.  Feel free to bring any video games or game systems that you would like.  :)

I'm going to cap this event off at 15, because we all know how Meetup works... 15 will turn into 6-10 people.  If we do end up with the full 15, there is a clubhouse in the complex that we could move to.  They have PLENTY of space and tables, and a full kitchen.  Just no TV. (Sad, I know).  So anyways, WHOSE IN??

Awesome night! Quite a few back-outs and no-shows, but the people we did have show up were pretty awesome! Thanks to everyone. Great games, awesome game of poker, (the winnings went to a good cause, so that was cool), good conversation, and great food/drinks! Look forward to doing this again soon!

Argh... I really wanted to attend this. However, I am still up with my dog's stomach issues tonight at 4:30 in the morning. One, I have to get some sleep; and, two, I'd give away all my cash.

    February 23, 2014

    • Steve

Oh dang. Sorry to hear that. Hope your dog gets better. We will bee doing this again for sure. :) Maybe we'll catch you at the next one.

    Hey Steve,

What's the name of your apt complex?

    February 22, 2014

    • Steve

Like i said, i have 3 poker sets. 1 nicer one, and 2 cheap ones. So we have a lot of chips, but they might not all match. You could bring yours, if you'd like though. Just in case. And josh, just make sure they drop you off on 88th ave and not central ave. As long as you end up on 88th, you'll be close. My apartment is right on 88th. The building is W, right out front by the ponds. If the driver can't figure it out, based on those instructions, he shouldn't be driving a bus. Lol. Call me if there's any questions. I can even talk to your driver, if you need me to.

      February 22, 2014

    • Steve

By the way, don't want the size of the complex scaring everyone off. It's really not as difficult as it's sounding. Lol. I'm just being very descriptive. There's just another road (88th ave) that cuts right through the complex. My apartment is right on that road. If you are plugging the address into a gps, the 88th ave address will bring you right to me. Instead of you having to search for the right building. Like I said before, if there's any question or confusion, please don't hesitate to call me! [masked]). Don't want the large apartment complex causing people to back out. It's really not that complicated. lol.

This is somewhat related to Sunday. One of our organizers, Clarissa San Diego, got some great news today. She has been selected to participate on StartupBus North America to represent the Northwest region! it is a mobile hack-a-thon starting from Seattle, WA to Austin, TX. She'll be on the bus with a bunch of talented strangers ranging from developers, designers, & entrepreneurs to create & launch an app in 72 hours & be ready to pitch to a group of investors at the end of the line at SXSW in Austin. This is a great opportunity of a lifetime but she needs your help! Please check out her "gofundme" link for more info. Any help is surely appreciated!

Speaking of the Super Nintendo...I have a truly Brobdingnagian-sized collection of SNES games, therefore, simply make a request and I'll bring said game or games. :]

Poker night is a week away! If you realize at any point this week that you won't be able to attend, please change your RSVP setting so someone else might have the chance to sign up instead. Feel free to bring any games you would like. I will provide some food, but feel free to bring anything you would like to share. Also, if anyone has some extra fold-up or camping chairs, we could probably use them! I have about 8 chairs, and the 3 seater couch. A few more chairs would probably help! If you can provide some, let me know! Thanks, and see you on Sunday!
