A Game of Mid 11th Century Thrones - Sasha Myerson
History largely portrays William "the Conqueror" as a brilliant, machiavellian tactician. But history is written, and in the case of the Bayeux Tapestry sewn, by the winners. Retracing the wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff that led up to the Battle of Hastings a very different history emerges. A half century saga of luck, betrayal, portentous comets, papal bulls, norse raiders, chivalric riders, and the bonds of family torn apart by a vacant throne. The clash for power between Harold Godwinson Earl of Wessex and William Duke of Normandy, literally a very lucky bastard, would culminate in a battle which changed Britain and the act of warfare forever.
Sasha Myerson graduated with a B.A. in Medieval Studies with a minor in Art History. This makes her uniquely qualified to give NerdNite talks and flip burgers for a living. The Battle of Hastings holds a dear place in her heart because, while studying abroad in Scotland, a teacher said "... we all know what happened in 1066" and she promptly realized her collegiate studies were elementary school stuff for Europeans.
