N4N Hike @ Mount Diablo

The weather is warming up and wildflowers are beginning to bloom. What better time to head up Mount Diablo for the first Nerds For Nature hike of 2014!

This will be a full day of casual, unguided hiking with fellow nature nerds, split up into two fairly relaxed pace hikes. There will be plenty of time for snapping pictures, using iNaturalist, chatting, walking, and marveling at the spectacular scenery and wondrous wildlife of the Mount Diablo region.

The event will be set up so that you can join us for the full day of hiking or come only early or late in the day.

10:00 am - Meet your carpool near Rockridge BART station & maybe grab some coffee... then head out (map).

11:30 - Gather at Curry Point

11:30 to 1:30 - Wildflower hike along Curry Canyon fire road (4 miles, easy)

2:00 - Meet at Lower Summit picnic area for lunch

2:30 to 5:30 - Summit hike along Bald Ridge/Prospectors Gap (5-6 miles, steep at parts)

Unfortunately, Most of Mt. Diablo is NOT accessible by public transit so carpooling will be necessary.

There is a CARPOOL SIGN-UP SHEET HERE. Please volunteer to drive if you can. The spreadsheet has columns for whether you are planning to come for one or both hikes. Passengers and Drivers - please communicate with each other if plans vary from the schedule above.

Meeting Points -

Before 11:30 - Curry Point parking area

Before 2:30 - Lower Summit parking/picnic area

Food/Water -

Like the rest of the state, Mt. Diablo is facing a water shortage so please bring in plenty of water from outside. THERE MAY NOT BE POTABLE WATER READILY AVAILABLE NEAR THE TRAILS.

There is a $10 parking fee to enter the park by car so be prepared to chip in to help your driver cover this (as well as gas).

Curry Canyon -

Colorful wildflowers, small ponds, and sandstone rock formations dot the hillsides of this geographically varied canyon. The 4 mile trail (2 out, 2 back) passes over gently rolling hills in and out of wooded areas.

Summit -

Explore a very different environment as we walk through the charred landscape left behind by last years wildfire. We will have chances to photo document the regrowth progress for the Monitoring Change project and soak in panoramic views of the Bay Area. This trail is steep and rocky in parts and will be approximately 5-6 miles (exact route still TBD but tentatively North Peak trail to Prospectors Gap Rd, returning via Back Creek/Bald ridge).
