S1E5: Redshirts by John Scalzi

June's theme is "the future", so we are going to celebrate the lives of those brave, heretofore unnamed federation officers in the red uniforms.

"Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It’s a prestige posting, with the chance to serve on "Away Missions" alongside the starship’s famous senior officers.

Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to realize that 1) every Away Mission involves a lethal confrontation with alien forces, 2) the ship’s senior officers always survive these confrontations, and 3) sadly, at least one low-ranking crew member is invariably killed. Unsurprisingly, the savvier crew members belowdecks avoid Away Missions at all costs.

Then Andrew stumbles on information that transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starshipIntrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives." - Barnes and Noble

Good grief, I just read that Redshirts won the Locus Award for best SF.

There seems to be alot of overlap between the Locus and Hugo nominees. I've yet to read all of the 5 Hugo noms (for which I can vote since I'm a Worldcon member), and no matter what, I plan to rank Redshirts #5 because it so doesn't deserve to win any awards.

Unless there is a literary version of the Razzie.

Hey guys, after we pick a location how would we feel about a late showing of World War Z?

I just realized I can't even do a late movie that night because I have an 8am meeting. I was talking crazy talk.

I might be running a little late getting to Tustin pending traffic

Location will be updated tomorrow around noon. Will probably be Irvine or Tustin.

I don't think I can last that long on a Friday, but maybe one of the other organizers can do it? Also, I promise I'll get on top of the location at some point this weekend. On a side note, for months I've been saying how horrible the trailer looks for that movie, but it's certified fresh on the T-meter. In my defense, I still say the trailer makes it look like a multi-million dollar mess.

Please come prepared to this meeting with books that you have NOT read on the following themes:

    1. July: America (takes place in America; is quintessentially American; features an American protagonist...yeah, I know we should have saved American Gods for July)
    2. August: Noir or Mystery
    3. September: Pirates (September 19th is Talk like a Pirate Day)
    4. Horror
    5. November's book will be Ender's Game which is set to be released this month

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
